Schmeichel backs De Gea to continue as Man Utd number one as replacement would be costly
Kasper Schmeichel thinks that Manchester United should be looking to keep David De Gea as his replacement could prove to be costly.
There has been plenty of debate around the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford this season.
While De Gea does have his strengths, several pundits have pinpointed his distribution as an area of weakness.
As Erik ten Hag is looking to take his United side to the next level, it is only natural that they are currently weighing up his replacement.
The Spanish goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season, but the club are in negotiations over a fresh deal.
Schmeichel thinks that De Gea has done well to adapt to the new manager and that he is worthy of a new contract with the club.
“Looking at this season he’s been asked to play a completely different way than he’s ever had to play,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports.
“From what I’m seeing, people notice the things that have gone wrong but there’s a lot of things that have gone right as well. I think he’s playing at a really high level with his feet.
“The actual goalkeeping side of it has never been a question because it’s outrageous how good he is.”
De Gea has kept 15 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, which is the most of any goalkeeper.
“I think United are looking at it like what would it cost them to replace him. It would cost you north of £60m and you already have a guy who’s a top class goalkeeper and from the looks of it wants to stay so I think they’ll reach some kind of agreement with him.”
Man Utd have been linked with several goalkeepers since Ten Hag’s arrival, with the most prevalent links being with Diogo Costa.
The Portugal international seems to be a player of interest for United, but it would likely take around £66million to sign him.
Ten Hag will be keen on strengthening other areas of the pitch too and so he could look to keep De Gea around for at least one more year.
The priority for Man Utd in the summer is signing a striker and so their pursuit for a goalkeeper could go on the back burner for now.
De Gea is still capable of being a top shot-stopper, but his distribution inconsistencies have put a question mark over his head.
