Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel picked out Tyrell Malacia for criticism during the Red Devils’ 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Thursday night.

Spurs were coming off the back of a 6-1 drubbing away to Newcastle on Sunday and looked in trouble again when Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford fired Man Utd into a 2-0 half-time lead.

But interim boss Ryan Mason rallied his players at the break and they hit back strongly in the second half, goals from Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min rescuing the result.

The result keeps the race for the top four alive with Man Utd still six points ahead of Spurs but with the huge advantage of two games in hand.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are Erik ten Hag’s preferred centre-back pairing but, with the duo and Harry Maguire all missing, the Red Devils started with Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof in the middle of defence.

“With Varane and Martinez out, defensively we are a bit vulnerable,” Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.

Malacia came off the bench in the second half to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Man Utd legend Schmeichel put the blame at the Dutchman’s door for the second goal.

Asked for his opinion on the first goal, Schmeichel added: “First of all, there is no pressure on the cross, they should stop the cross at birth really, and then nobody follows in.

“Lindelof is half a centre-half, half a full-back and Luke Shaw is a full-back and they are drawn towards the ball, they are not drawn to marking spaces or players.

“And that second goal, I don’t know what Malacia is doing.

“The ball runs straight past him and he just looks at it. You have just come on, you have to make some sort of impact, you have a job to do.

“I’m not sure why he [ten Hag] took Wan-Bissaka off because he was really good today. We’re 2-1 up, you don’t change it, it is not that bad where you take your best defender off.”

Reflecting on his side throwing away a two-goal lead, Ten Hag said: “After half-time, there was a difference. We lost the control. We were not ball-secure. Then you have to go into the fight.

“When you lose your battles, you don’t block the crosses, when you don’t squeeze out, you don’t block shots, you concede goals and that’s what happened.

“Finally you have to be satisfied and take that point.”
