Scotland manager Steve Clarke backs Ben Doak saying he is a player who is "good for now" but says they will need to "protect and look after" the promising talent.

Speaking in the aftermath of the national side's first Nations League match of this international break, as they hosted Croatia at Hampden, the manager

John McGinn's late strikes saved the day as the Tartan Army were finally cheering for a win again as Croatia were reduced to ten men prior to the break and Scotland had 45 minutes to attack the visitors. They took their time but with just under five minutes to go of regular time, McGinn scored the crucial goal after some smart work from Doak.

He said: "First of all it's nice to have a win on the board in a competitive match. So, really pleased for the players. The effort they've put in up until now deserved more points and it's nice to get that win."

On Doak, he added: "Yeah, he was good. It was good, but I thought he might be. He's come into the team, he's shown a really positive attitude, [and] he brings us something a little bit different to what we've had before, so, really pleased with Ben.

"He gets the assist for the goal with the run, could maybe have had a couple more, could maybe have scored one himself.

"That's a contribution from a young player that we need to protect and look after, but realise that he is good for now and hopefully for a long time in the future."

Doak started the night while John McGinn was benched on his return to the national side, after missing the last camp through injury, but Clarke didn't think taking the youngster out would have been the right call.

"After what Ben's done in the last few games I felt it wasn't the time to take him out of the firing line. I looked at Ryan [Christie] and Ben's contribution the last time we played... and both Ben and Ryan did well for us out in Croatia, so that was the thinking behind that," he said.

"But, I also felt I was strengthening the bench a bit with John to come in and he does what he does, coming off the bench and scoring the winner."
