Scotland duo Stuart Hogg and Finn Russell have been left out of head coach Gregor Townsend’s 40-man squad for their tour of South America.

There has been no indication as to why the talismanic duo have missed the cut, albeit the players were involved with a disciplinary issue during the latter stage of the Six Nations.

Captain Gilchrist

Second-row Grant Gilchrist takes on the captaincy in Hogg’s absence as Scotland prepare for a three match Test-series against Argentina while Scotland ‘A’ will face Chile the weekend before the internationals take place.

Townsend has named six uncapped players, including Edinburgh’s Ben Muncaster, Glen Young, Matt Currie as well as London Irish wing Kyle Rowe and Glasgow Warriors pair Murphy Walker and Ollie Smith.

There are several significant returnees who were sidelined by injury as Scott Cummings, Rory Darge, Matt Fagerson, Rory Sutherland, Jamie Bhatti and Jonny Gray are selected.

Key players Hamish Watson, Ali Price, Duhan van der Merwe and Zander Fagerson all retain their place.

Scotland ‘A’ have not played a competitive fixture since 2014 and the clash will be used as preparation for Chile as they look to push for World Cup qualification.

Meanwhile, it will be Scotland’s first ever three match Test series against a tier 1 nation.
