Scottish Rugby have announced that Scotland A will take part in a competitive match against Chile in Santiago in June and it will form part of their country’s 2022 summer tour in South America.

The match will be the first fixture of that tour and will take place before the three-Test series in Argentina.

It will also be the first time that a Scotland side take one Chile, who will use the match as part of their preparation for their Rugby World Cup play-off games against the USA.

Scotland A consist of players on the fringes of selection to the country’s senior Test team. The A team have not been in action in more than eight years and their last encounter was against England in 2014 and that match finished as a 16-16 draw.

Mixture of youth and experience

Scotland head coach said they will look to select an experimental side for the A game against Chile.

“Scotland A will play the first match of our summer tour, against Chile, which will be a new challenge against a rugby nation on the rise – one that is on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup.

“Similar to the Tonga match last Autumn at BT Murrayfield, we will look to use a blend of youth and experience to start off the tour on a positive note.

“With the World Cup just around the corner, the four matches this summer will allow our players the chance to gain more game time and experience on the international stage.

“We always enjoy connecting with other countries and we are proud to be able to play Chile for the first time. It’ll also allow us another week to acclimatise to similar conditions that we’ll experience in Argentina such as playing at altitude and in a different time zone.”
