Former Rangers star Scott Arfield is on his way back to the UK as he gets set to quit MLS side Charlotte FC.

The ex-Canada captain, 35, moved Stateside last summer following the end of his five years at Ibrox. But the playmaker has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth, often being used an impact player from the bench. Now in the twilight years of his career, American reporter Tom Bogert says that the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title-winner is poised for a move to the lower leagues in England.

Arfield - who shares a dressing room with ex-Celtic star Liel Abada - wasn't at training yesterday after being granted permission by boss Dean Smith to sort out his future. Arfield scored three goals in 33 appearances for the Crown, based in North Carolina.

A fans' favourite at Rangers, Arfield was released by Michael Beale last year after five seasons in Glasgow. He played a key role in ending Celtic's ten-in-a-row dreams and also helped the club reach the Europa League Final, while also getting his hands on the Scottish Cup.

After coming through the ranks at Falkirk, Arfield spent the bulk of his career in England with Huddersfield Town and Burnley before returning north of the border in 2018.
