Scott Brown has broken his silence on interest from St Johnstone as he explained why he signed a new Ayr United deal.

The Premiership club sought to speak with the Celtic hero about their manager vacancy after they sacked Craig Levein following a relatively poor start to the season. The Ayr head coach was one of their prime targets as they moved to speak with the 39-year-old about potentially coming to McDiarmid Park.

Brown would ultimately snub their advances and pen an extension at Somerset Park until 2027 with assistant Steven Whittaker, and he told Sportsound on his decision while playing coy on Saints talks.

"I signed a new deal and I think that's all we really need to talk about," he said. "I'm happy here, enjoying it, the chairman is a fantastic owner of a football club who lets you deal with the day to day events. But also it's, 'That's your budget, go spend it the way you want to spend it', and then it's up to me to make the mistakes.

"I spoke to a few people and asked for advice and they're all in the same wavelength as I was. Did I speak to St Johnstone? For me, it's not about who I spoke to. It's all about what's happening now. That's all in the past and everything's in the future."
