Scott Brown has reportedly pulled out of the running to be the next St Johnstone manager after holding talks.

The Ayr United boss was one of the names in the frame for the McDiarmid Park vacancy and thought to be a frontrunner. He himself was keen to explore the possible opportunity of taking over in Perth and moving up to the Premiership and so held discussions with American owner Adam Webb.

However the Daily Mail is now reporting that the 39-year-old has made the decision to stay put at the Championship leaders. Brown took over at Somerset Park last season and steadied the ship before starting this season on fire and leading the Honest Men to the top of the table. He will now concentrate on trying to keep them there and winning promotion.

Saints have also reportedly asked Aberdeen for their permission to speak to their first-team coach Peter Leven, who is a highly-rated coach and impressed when managing the Dons on an interim basis.

They also want to speak to Larne boss Tiernan Lynch, who has won two successive Northern Irish titles. Meanwhile, there is said to be an unknown overseas candidate in the mix too.

Craig Levein was sacked by St Johnstone seven days ago after just one win from their opening five league games left them sitting tenth. His assistant Andy Kirk is currently in charge and could be another option permanently.
