Scott Brown reportedly wants to hold talks with St Johnstone after emerging as the frontrunner to replace Craig Levein.

Celtic icon Brown has led Ayr United to the top of the Championship after arriving at Somerset Park earlier in the summer. And the ex-Fleetwood Town boss could now land a quick-fire chance to manage in the Premiership with Saints ready to make an approach.

The Daily Mail reports that former Scotland and Hoops skipper Brown, 39, is keen to speak with McDiarmid Park owner Adam Webb and claims Brown could even be in the dugout to face Brendan Rodgers in time for Saturday's Premiership clash in Perth.

It's understood Aberdeen coach Peter Leven and Larne gaffer Tiernan Lynch are also in the frame for the vacancy as St Johnstone seek permission to speak with all three candidates before making a final decision. Former Raith Rovers manager Ian Murray is also on the radar.

Levein was sacked just five games into the new season, leaving his side sitting 10th in the Premiership with just one victory. Coaches Andy Kirk and Alex Cleland took charge of Saturday's 3-3 draw at Ross County.
