Scott McTominay throws down Scotland gauntlet as Napoli man wants to make history
Scott McTominay wants this current crop of national team players to continue to make history and become the nation's “most successful” side ever.
A dismal Euro 2024 campaign had many of the Tartan Army feeling crestfallen, given the sparkling form that saw us ease our way to back-to-back European finals. However, the Napoli midfielder knows the squad still have much more to achieve and push for, despite making the finals of a major international tournament twice under Steve Clarke.
Speaking ahead of a crucial Nations League double-header, as the men's national side look to stop a horrid run of just one win in 16, the former Manchester United player has set out a massive goal for him and his teammates to chase down. While no Scotland side has ever lifted a trophy, qualification for World Cups used to be the norm, and the campaign to reach the 2026 edition begins early next year — and it’s bound to be a target for this current crop.

“There's always a point to prove,” said McTominay who currently sits top of Serie A with Napoli, alongside his compatriot Billy Gilmour who also made the move to Naples in the summer.
“There's never a time where you can rest and think, ah, we've arrived here, we've got two major tournaments.
“No, there's always a time to improve and for us, that's just the way that we need to be as a group and the way that we are and you can never settle for the things that are in the past. We want to move forward and we want to be the most successful Scottish team in history.”
