Rio Ferdinand branded Liverpool a “small club” and believes they showed a weak mentality after what he saw in the aftermath of their 7-0 thumping of Man Utd.

Liverpool breathed new life into their quest for top four after demolishing Man Utd 7-0 at Anfield nine days ago. The victory brought them within three points of Tottenham who held fourth spot at the time.

A trip to Bournemouth – who Liverpool smashed 9-0 in the reverse fixture – was expected to bring forth another easy three points a week later.

However, the Reds put in an insipid display on the south coast and fell to a humbling 1-0 defeat. Wins for both Tottenham and Newcastle in the same weekend undid the work Liverpool had done in closing the gap to the final Champions League qualification place.

Now, speaking on his YouTube channel, Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand savaged Liverpool for failing to follow up on their Man Utd victory.

In Ferdinand’s eyes, the 1-0 loss to the Cherries showcased the small club mentality Liverpool possess under Jurgen Klopp.

“That is a small club mentality,” said Ferdinand. “That screams small club.

“Screaming and shouting when they beat United, yes they battered us, hands up.”

Ferdinand went on to claim the Reds will miss out on fourth spot – something that may well weaken their chances of landing No 1 transfer target, Jude Bellingham.

In that scenario, the Sun recently reported Liverpool are sizing up three Premier League raids for midfielders who’ll soften the blow of missing out on Bellingham.

Ferdinand blasts Carragher and Souness

In any case, Ferdinand had more to say on Liverpool, this time taking Sky Sports’ Liverpool-leaning pundits to task.

Sky’s quartet of pundits for the Liverpool v Man Utd clash comprised of Jamie Carragher, Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Gary Neville. The split was an even two and two for the Reds and Red Devils.

However, Ferdinand took umbrage with the manner in which Carragher and Souness acted after the final whistle blew. In Ferdinand’s mind, the pundit pair “should be ashamed of themselves”.

Ferdinand added: “The way Souness and Carragher were celebrating, the way they were trying to antagonise the guys [Roy Keane and Gary Neville], and then their team goes and does that at the weekend.

“They should be ashamed of themselves.”
