Seals exit Class 3A tourney with loss to Central Dauphin

Feb. 9—HERSHEY — Selinsgrove may have been eliminated from the Class 3A team wrestling championships Friday, but you wouldn't have known it from the faces of the Seals' coaches and wrestlers.

After being routed by Trinity on Thursday night, the Seals battled to keep things closer with Central Dauphin before bowing out of the consolation bracket with a 48-26 loss at the Giant Center.

"That's what I knew we could do coming here with most of the teams, not all of them, was to keep it respectful," said Selinsgrove coach Seth Martin. "You look at that score and it's really not that bad. Coming into states and losing by (22) points, I can live with it because I thought we wrestled well. We were outgunned in a lot of those matches, especially in the middleweights — they are super tough.

"I expected that we were gonna be giving up some bonus points."

The Seals ended their dual-meet season with a record of 10-5 and the program's second District 4 team title.

Central Dauphin raced to a 42-6 lead Friday morning after it earned pins in all seven of its victories during the early stretch. The Rams recorded falls at 114, 121, 133, 139, 145, 152 and 160 pounds.

The Seals' only win during the opening eight matches came at 127 pounds, where freshman Alex Kadryna pinned Trinity's Aidan Mariano. Kadryna bounced back from Thursday's match where he was pinned while leading by a point.

"He had wrestled (Mariano) earlier in the year and beat him 5-2," Martin said. "So for him to come back after what happened (Thursday) and look a little bit more like himself and get a pin ... He's not a real pinner, so it was nice to get six from him. That was unexpected.

"I thought a decision would be good, and he ended up getting six instead of three, so I was definitely happy with that."

Another Seals freshman, Owen Hoffman, picked up a win for the District 4 champions at 172, where he faced off against Benny Bentz. Hoffman and Bentz wrestled scoreless into the third period. Hoffman recorded the first point of the match after he escaped Bentz's hold with 57 seconds remaining. Hoffman then fought for a takedown with nine seconds left and went on to 5-0 decision that made the score 42-9.

"I'm sure he's elated, because he should be," Martin said. "Coming here as a freshman, as an on-and-off starter for the year and being one of our few guys that got a win at Hershey, that's great for him."

Hoffman's win was the spark for four consecutive Selinsgrove victories. The next three matches were all bonus-point wins for the Seals.

At 189, Tucker Teats pinned Cole Ramberger in 3:26 for the senior's second fall of the tournament.

Then, at 215, the Seals' Jarod Bullington rallied from down 5-1 to earn a pin against Anthony Neuhard and trim the deficit to 42-21. Bullington gave up a takedown and nearfall during the opening period, but earned the pin in 3:49.

"I knew that he could beat (Neuhard). It was unfortunate that he gave up five points in the first, one-minute period," Martin said. "He's not a real big points-scorer; he's the kind of guy where somebody's gonna get pinned, whether it's him or the other guy."

The Seals' final win of the match came at heavyweight where Jack Peters scored a technical fall against Gabriel Lara, 16-0 in 4:47. Peters also earned a technical fall Thursday match against Trinity.

The Rams closed the match with a pin by 107-pounder Thunder Beard.

The Seals now turn their attention to individual postseason tournaments. They have a week to rest before the Districts 4/9 Class 3A championships Feb. 17 at Williamsport.
