Soon-to-be Everton manager Sean Dyche is looking to make signings before the transfer window slams shut and is reportedly targeting Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The English coach has already missed out on his first-choice centre-forward target – Iliman Ndiaye – and is now very interested in signing the Swede as an alternative.

Dyche has only got until Tuesday to get deals over the line, but Gyokeres could prove to be a valuable addition as the Toffees’ need for goal-scoring recruits is clear to see.

Indeed, Everton have endured a horrific start to the Premier League campaign after picking up just 15 points from their 20 opening matches, which is now officially the worst start in their history.

The Toffees only escaped relegation after the penultimate game of last season, so Dyche will be keen to avoid a similar scramble by bringing in some quality reinforcements.

As mentioned, the former Burnley manager had already instructed his new club to try and sign Sheffield United striker Ndiaye, but the player allegedly rejected Everton in favour of remaining at Bramall Lane.

Now, Dyche has made Gyokeres his new number-one target, but the Merseyside club may have to cough up a sizeable fee.

Although, they look set to receive approximately £40m from the sale of Anthony Gordon to Newcastle, which is a deal close to completion.

According to Football League World, Coventry have slapped a hefty £18m price tag on Gyokeres, who has received interest from other Premier League clubs this month.

Indeed, Leeds United have previously registered an interest in the forward, while Frank Lampard was also keen on brining the Swede to Goodison Park during his tenure.

Everton have done some very questionable business in the past. Since Farhad Moshiri became a majority shareholder in 2016, they have spent over £600m on players and still, somehow, have got worse.

Before the Iranian’s arrival however, the Blues had a record of bringing in players from lower divisions on a tight budget, sometimes with great success.

For instance, David Moyes signed Tim Cahill from Millwall for just £2.2m and he went on to score 68 goals for Everton and remains a cult hero among the fans.

With the Toffees currently joint-bottom of the table, they could do with another Cahill. But, Gyokeres could also be a fantastic addition.

The Sky Blues’ striker has netted 12 goals in 27 league appearances this season – the second-most in the Championship. If Gyokeres can score another 12 for Everton in what remains of the current campaign, that could be the difference between relegation and survival.

It is, admittedly, a big risk to splash out £18m on someone with no Premier League experience, but with the transfer window drawing to a close, Everton could be forced to take a punt.
