Wayne Rooney put his body on the line to help DC United beat Colorado Rapids and netted his first goal for the club since moving to the United States.

England’s all-time leading scorer is starting a new chapter in his career across the pond in the MLS and had an eventful night on Saturday with his new club.

Rooney beat his former Manchester United team-mate Tim Howard to give his side the lead at Audi Field and DC went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to a late own goal.

Niki Jackson’s error handed United victory but they were forced to battle hard to get over the line to secure what is only their second win since May 19.

Defending a late corner, with the pressure well and truly on for the MLS Eastern Conference’s bottom side, United needed everyone back to keep Colorado out.

Rooney has never been one to shy away from his defensive duties despite playing at the sharp end of the field and the ex-England captain was right in the thick of the action.

But unfortunately for the Liverpudlian, he was sandwiched between two Rapids players and sent crashing to the floor as he held his face in his hands.

And the full extent of the damage became clear when the television cameras focused on the striker as he got to his feet.

Blood poured from the face of the stocky striker and he needed medical attention to fix a broken nose that saw him leave the field covered in claret.

DC United manager Ben Olsen said: “I don’t think it’s the first time he’s bled in a game. He is a tough guy and I think that he will shake it off.

“He has been fantastic in every aspect, in every way that we want him to be with this group – with his leadership and goal-scoring ability. Hopefully, it can continue to get better.”
