Senegal 2-0 Cape Verde LIVE! Dieng goal - AFCON result, match stream and latest updates today

Senegal vs Cape Verde - LIVE!

The last-16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations continues this afternoon as Senegal take on Cape Verde for a place in the quarter-finals.

However, the much will take place under a cloud after the horiffic scenes outside last night’s match between Cameroon and Comoros, where a crush has left at least eight people dead.

In terms of the football, pre-tournament favourites Senegal were hugely underwhelming in the group stage.

Though they eventually finished top of Group B, they did so despite scoring only one goal, a 97th-minute penalty to win their opening game against Zimbabwe, before back-to-back goalless draws against Malawi and Guinea.

They will need to improve against a Cape Verde side who secured their knockout round spot as one of the best third-placed teams by holding hosts Cameroon to a draw in their final game.

  • GOAL! Dieng seals win late on

  • GOAL! Mane gives Senegal the lead

  • RED CARD! Cape Verde down to nine after goalkeeper dismissed

  • RED CARD! Andrade sent off after VAR review

Match report

18:50 , Matt Verri

Sadio Mane scored the winner as Senegal made extremely hard work of nine-man Cape Verde to move through to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win.

Cape Verde, in their second-ever appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages, had Patrick Andrade shown a straight red card after 20 minutes, before goalkeeper Vozinha was also sent-off in the second-half after a heavy collision with Mane.

The Liverpool forward put his side in front shortly after, despite still looking dazed, as Senegal eventually found their way through a stubborn defence. Cape Verde were in it right until stoppage time, when Bambia Dieng sealed the win on the break.

Impressive from Dieng off the bench...

What next...

18:06 , Matt Verri

Senegal will be back in action on Sunday, in the quarter-finals. Equatorial Guinea or Mali will be their opponents.

Three goals scored, none conceded for Senegal in the tournament so far.

Efficient, you could say...

Win eventually sealed...

18:00 , Matt Verri

FULL TIME

17:55 , Matt Verri

And that’s the final whistle. 2-0 Senegal.

They made really hard work of that, considering Cape Verde had a man sent off after 20 minutes and then their goalkeeper Vozinha dismissed after an hour.

But Mane and then Dieng eventually seal the win, and Senegal are through to the quarter-finals.

17:54 , Matt Verri

90+5 mins: Just a minute left now.

Cape Verde have done impressively to keep it this tight with the red cards, but it will be Senegal going through.

GOAL! Senegal 2-0 Cape Verde | Bamba Dieng 90+2

17:51 , Matt Verri

AT LAST SENEGAL FINISH IT OFF!

They couldn’t mess this chance off. So much space for them to break into.

Diedhiou squares it for Dieng and he slots it past the onrushing goalkeeper. Senegal seal the win.

17:48 , Matt Verri

89 mins: How have they not put this to bed?!

Senegal have three man free at the back post, but somehow make a complete mess of it and Cape Verde can clear. Monteiro leads the break away, floated wide to Tavarez.

He has options in the box... can’t pick one of them out.

17:46 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Free-kick for Cape Verde, this could be their last chance.

Monteiro clips it in towards the far post, headed away. Cape Verde can’t get it back in either, and Senegal have a goal-kick. They’ll slow things right down.

17:44 , Matt Verri

85 mins: NEARLY A CHANCE!

Cape Verde are somehow hanging on, and they create an opening for the equaliser. Low ball into the box, Monteiro is free but it’s a weak effort bobbled straight at Mendy. Should have done a lot better.

17:43 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Match drifting towards a conclusion now, very comfortable for Senegal as you’d expect.

Well-worked move again, but Gueye sends it into the side-netting. They’ve had a number of chances to make it 2-0.

17:39 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Dia with a nice ball into the six-yard box, just about cleared behind for a corner. Wasn’t too far away from being an own-goal.

Cape Verde defend it well though and clear the danger.

17:37 , Matt Verri

78 mins: NEARLY TWO!

And it looked like it was. Dieng picks it up, drives inside and goes for 20 yards out. Catches it really sweetly, but it flies into the side-netting.

Think most in the ground though that was a goal.

17:34 , Matt Verri

75 mins: There are just no real options on the ball for Cape Verde... don’t have enough player out there to cause problems!

If Senegal get their final-ball right, there sould be plenty of chances for them to double the lead.

17:32 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Mendy with a very cynical foul, straight into the referee’s book after that.

Cape Verde have put a big effort in to keep it tight for this long, do they have one last push to try and find an equaliser?

17:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Dieng replaces Mane, who isn’t able to continue.

More injury worries for Senegal. Pape Gueye down after he gets tripped up... looked fairly innocuous but he’s stayed down.

17:26 , Matt Verri

GOAL STANDS!

Senegal do indeed have the lead. And now Mane is down, he surely has to come off?

Shouldn’t have carried on after that collision with the goalkeeper, but now he definitely has to come off. Looks like he will.

17:24 , Matt Verri

VAR checking it though... Cape Verde are adamant there was a foul in the box from the corner.

It’s taking a long time. And now the referee is over to look at the monitor!

GOAL! Senegal 1-0 Cape Verde | Sadio Mane 63'

17:22 , Matt Verri

SENEGAL TAKE THE LEAD!

That was inevitable. Sarr whips the ball in, flicked out to Mane at the back post. He sends a lovely curling effort right into the top corner, and the man on the line can’t head it away.

17:21 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Heroics from Rosa!

The new goalkeeper is straight into the action with a great save, and then a brilliant block comes in to deny the follow-up.

Cape Verde hanging on for dear life now, and it’s nearly an own goal as a deflection loops towards goal. Corner.

17:19 , Matt Verri

61 mins: JUST WIDE.

Pape Gueye whips it towards the far corner, but it doesn’t have enough curl on it. Cape Verde survive, but what on earth is there plan now for the next half an hour?!

17:19 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Rosa is the substitute goalkeeper, he’ll be on for the rest of the match.

Vozinha is still sitting down on the touchline, looking in a really bad way. No camera shots of Mane yet... he also took a heavy blow in the collision.

After all that, it’s a free-kick just outside the box for Senegal.

RED CARD!

17:16 , Matt Verri

CAPE VERDE DOWN TO NINE!

Vozinha doesn’t know where he is on the touchline, but the issue of whether he’s going to continue has been sorted for him. Red card!

He did take Mane out on the edge of the box, and the Liverpool man would have been through. So unfortunate for Cape Verde.

17:13 , Matt Verri

54 mins: This is a rarity... a Cape Verde corner. They have to really make the most of this.

Good ball in, but header is looped up. Mendy rushes out to claim and just about does so before the ball leaves the box.

Goalkeeper sends it straight up field towards Mane, he heads it on as the goalkeeper rushes out and it’s a really nasty collision. Vozinha looks seriously dazed. Probably a foul, but main thing for now is that he’s staggering around claiming he’s fine. He very much isn’t fine.

17:10 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Deep ball from Sarr into the box, Diedhiou on the stretch can’t head it back into across goal.

Comes to Pape Gueye 20 yards out, catches the strike well but whistles over the bar.

17:08 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Ciss goes for goal from range, blocked. Gueye then decides to try his luck from absolutely miles out... deflected, and dribbles through to the goalkeeper.

Vozinha launches it downfield into the Senegal half, where there are no Cape Verde players. Their game-plan is very clear.

17:06 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Cape Verde sitting even deep at the start of the half. All nine outfield players within 30 yards of their goal.

Not going to be easy for Senegal to break them down, going to need some creativity.

17:04 , Matt Verri

Players back out for the second half.

Time to see what the Senegal boss Aliou Cisse has been able to change at the break. Borges is on for Lopes, as Cape Verde make a substitution.

Back underway!

16:58 , Matt Verri

Three full matches and now half of this last-16 clash... Senegal have just one goal at the tournament so far.

Even that came from the penalty spot in the final seconds against Zimbabwe. They have just not been able to create enough, or then take, chances. Need to address that in the next 45 minutes...

16:53 , Matt Verri

Some first-half stats for you...

Senegal with 64% of possession, no surprise considering the red card to Cape Verde.

Just the three shots for Senegal though, and not a single one on target. That’s really poor considering the circumstances.

HALF-TIME

16:47 , Matt Verri

Senegal 0-0 Cape Verde

Goalless at half-time. Mane hit the post inside a minute as Senegal made a rapid start, and it looked like they would be in for a comfortable afternoon when Andrade was then shown a straight red card.

But Senegal have created very little since, as their goalscoring woes continue.

16:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on.

Both sides probably need the break. Senegal to get themselves back on track and causing a threat again, and Cape Verde to regroup ahead of another big 45 minutes.

16:44 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Ball over the top for Mane to run onto, looks like he’ll get on the end of it but Vozinha is off his line quickly and slides in to clear.

He’s down now, hurt himself clearing the ball. Will need some treatment.

16:42 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Sarr goes for the big switch out to Ciss, doesn’t connect with it at all and it’s out for a throw-in. Cape Verde a few minutes away from making it to half-time level.

Didn’t look like that would happen after the first few minutes, and particularly after the red card.

16:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Much, much better from Senegal.

Mane drives forward with pace, plays it inside to Gueye who sends it back to the Liverpool man first-time. Keeper is out quickly to smother the shot before Mane can line an effort up.

Corner, knocked down to the edge of the box. Pape Gueye takes a wild swing at it, and it flies over the bar.

16:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Things really opened up for Cape Verde, that was a decent chance.

Switched out to the right and they briefly have a man over. Ball through to Fortes has too much pace on it though and he can’t take it in his stride.

16:36 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Long ball forward to Diedhiou, over his head so he throws himself to the ground. Referee isn’t falling for that.

Vozinha in goal for Cape Verde is in no rush to pick it up, waiting for Diedhiou to pick himself up and come all the way to close him down.

16:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Played into Diedhiou, and he can’t hold it up. Really heavy touch.

Then try to build up on the right with Sarr and Dia, but Senegal stray offside. Frustrations building.

16:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Mane whips it out wide to the right, where Sarr is in space. He cuts inside, goes down thinking he’s been fouled and grabs hold of the ball.

Free-kick Cape Verde for handball. Senegal struggling to create much, even with the man advantage.

Why Andrade saw red...

16:29 , Matt Verri

16:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Plenty forward for Cape Verde, but it’s headed away.

Senegal briefly have the chance to break but don’t make the most of it, and Dia then stops Tavares driving forward for Cape Verde. Scrappy few minutes in the match.

16:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: That’s a bit of a mess from Senegal. They have a free-kick in a good position, Ciss takes it quickly and sends it through to Mane but too much pace on the ball and the Liverpool man can’t keep it in.

Cape Verde win a free-kick 40 yards out now. This is probably their best chance of scoring, a set piece.

16:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Very nearly opens up for Mane, who pounces on a loose pass and he has space in the Cape Verde half. Slides it through towards Diedhiou, not enough pace on it though.

Comes out to Dia, he tries to clip it first time into the box where Mane is completely free... looped up too much and the goalkeeper can easily claim.

16:23 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Cape Verde really up against it now. They were finding it hard enough with 11 on the pitch.

Sarr has space on the right wing, looks to put an early ball into the box but it’s straight out of play.

RED CARD!

16:20 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Andrade is going to be in trouble here, referee told by VAR to go and review the tackle. Think he’s going to be seeing red here.

AND HE IS! Patrick Andrade is off for Cape Verde. They’re down to ten men, and Senegal find themselves in a wonderful position now.

16:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: First yellow card of the match, and Andrade is the recipient.

Loose touch from the Cape Verde midfielder, he lunges in to try and recover the situation but catches Pape Gueye high instead. Poor challenge.

16:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Mane down as he drives towards the box. Wants a free-kick, gets a corner.

Short one again, and Ciss then puts it straight out of play. Safe to say these corners are not working at all for Senegal.

16:14 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Silly from Santos, who pulls Mane back on the edge of the box and it’s a free-kick in a great position for Senegal.

Idrissa Gueye standing over it. After plenty of build-up, it’s straight into the wall.

16:12 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Tavares has to cover well to intercept a ball over the top from Senegal. Boots it away, and it’s a corner.

Once again Senegal can’t make the most of it though. Cape Verde will be happy with how they’ve defended set-pieces in the early stages, and they’ve already been tested plenty of times.

16:10 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Dia has started on the right wing, and he knocks it past Stopira and back himself to beat the Cape Verde defender for pace.

He does get to the ball first, but only because he’s tripped Stopira up. Free-kick.

16:07 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Mane looks to play Ciss in on the overlap, Cape Verde cover well but they concede a third corner of the match already.

Short to Mane, who plays it low into the box and looks for the return ball... doesn’t come off. Three corner, and none of the routines have worked so far.

16:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Ciss has started brilliantly, he bursts down the left wing again and then plays a nice ball through... another corner.

Taken short this time. Back to Sarr, sent into the box but over everyone and out for a goal-kick. Cape Verde would do well to take their time over this, and slow things down a bit.

16:03 , Matt Verri

3 mins: And now a corner for Senegal, as Pico sends the ball behind. This is much more like it from them.

Sarr whips it in, but it’s not a great ball and Cape Verde head it away at the near post. Comes back to Sarr, who is then offside.

16:02 , Matt Verri

1 mins: MANE HITS THE POST!

What a start from Senegal, they’ve flown out of the blocks. Ciss gets to the byline and cuts a ball back, it’s then played across to Mane and his first-time effort cannons off the post. So close to an opener after 40 seconds.

KICK-OFF!

16:00 , Matt Verri

We’re underway in this last 16 clash!

15:57 , Matt Verri

Anthems done... it’s nearly time!

A few pre-match team photographs and then we’ll be ready to get going.

15:54 , Matt Verri

Just over five minutes to go until kick-off.

Hasn’t been easy for the favourites in the last 16 so far. Guinea and Nigeria both knocked out, Cameroon only just edging through.

Would be a surprise if Senegal had it all their own way this afternoon.

15:42 , Matt Verri

The winner of this afternoon’s match will face Mali or Equatorial Guinea in the quarter-finals - those two play each tomorrow.

We already know four of the teams through to the last eight, including Cameroon after their tight victory over Comoros last night.

15:33 , Matt Verri

Ismaila Sarr joined up with Senegal squad again this morning, having been in Barcelona for rehab on a knee injury.

The Watford winger is not yet ready to return to action, but could be available should Senegal go deep in the tournament.

Looks like Sarr might be welcomed back to Watford by Roy Hodgson in the near future...

15:24 , Matt Verri

Senegal have only scored one goal in the tournament so far - a 97th-minute penalty from Sadio Mane against Zimbabwe in their opening group game.

Since then, there’s been goalless draws against Guinea and Malawi.

They are still one of the favourites, but Senegal really need to start clicking into gear in attack. There were a total of four goals across Cape Verde’s group matches, which suggests we’re unlikely to get an end-to-end encounter with lots of goals this afternoon.

Koulibaly: We want to make country happy

15:13 , Matt Verri

Kalidou Koulibaly returned to the Senegal team for their final group-stage match and starts as expected once again. The defender has been in confident mood in the build-up to the game.

“We no longer have small teams in Africa and that is why we will go the derby against Cape Verde very motivated,” Koulibaly said.

“We accomplished our first mission of going past the group stage, and now we want to reach the ultimate. We are focusing on teamwork as it is going to be a very different match.

“We want to make our nation happy by winning convincingly to move to the next stage. We intend to give our best in all circumstances while respecting our opponents.”

Standard Sport prediction

14:09 , Malik Ouzia

Cape Verde edged through to the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, with their only win of the tournament coming against an Ethiopia team that had a man sent-off after 12 minutes.

Senegal have certainly not been at their best so far in Cameroon, but in what looks set to be a tight and nervy encounter, they have the star quality to make all the difference.

Senegal to win, 1-0.

Cape Verde team news

13:58 , Malik Ouzia

For Cape Verde, Garry Rodrigues started their first two group matches but was dropped to the bench against Cameroon. He was introduced at half-time and got the goal to earn a crucial point, and will be pushing for a recall to the starting XI.

Senegal team news

13:50 , Malik Ouzia

Despite a frustrating draw in their last match, Senegal were boosted by the return of Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly to the starting lineup, and they will provide a key foundation at the back.

Cheikhou Kouyate hasn’t missed a minute of the tournament so far but is suspended for this tie after picking up two bookings in the group stage.
