Sense of normality returns to 2022 ATP Tour as calendar takes shape until Wimbledon

·2-min read

The ATP has confirmed the calendar for the first half of the 2022 season with several tournaments returning to their usual time slots.

Following the cancellation of dozens of tournaments in 2020 and the rescheduling of several events this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, it could be business as usual in 2022.

The date’s for this year’s Australian Open, Indian Wells Open and French Open were all affected by Covid-19, but they are set to take place in their traditional slots.

The Australian Open – which ran from February 8-21 in 2021 – will move back to January as it will take place from the 17th until the 30th at Melbourne Park.

Tennis Australia has already confirmed 17 tournaments in the lead-up to the season-opening Grand Slam.

This year’s Indian Wells Masters was rescheduled to October, but the joint ATP-WTA event will move to March 7-14 and will be followed by the Miami Open.

The start of the French Open was pushed back one week this year, but it will start on May 23 at Roland Garros with the finals scheduled for June 5.

The Rio Open, US Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakesh and the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships in the Netherlands were some of the tournaments that were cancelled this year, but are pencilled in for 2022.

Wimbledon will bring down the curtain on the first half of the campaign with The Championships staying in its traditional slot, staring on June 27 and finishing on July 11.

“We’re delighted to announce the calendar and give our fans visibility for the first half of the 2022 ATP Tour season,” ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said.

“Tennis has had to adapt to fluid circumstances since the start of the pandemic and, while we continue to navigate its challenges, today’s announcement is a positive milestone in our continued return. We cannot wait to kick off another exciting season and welcome back to the calendar those events that were unfortunately unable to stage last year.”
