West Indies women’s star Hayley Matthews believes that Serena Williams would make a great cricketer.

Tennis is not without its cricket crossovers with Ashleigh Barty taking part in the Women’s Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat.

Barty also turned out for Queensland and were it not for her return to tennis, she might have been able to crack the Australia side as well.

Tennis and cricket have a crossover of skills with both requiring players to strike a rapidly moving ball.

Matthews feels that Serena Williams would be great to watch in an environment where she could thump the ball as far as she can muster.

Speaking in a Women’s Premier League promotional video Matthews was asked which athlete she would like to see playing cricket.

“Maybe someone like Serena Williams; I think she would be able to hit a lot of sixes,” Matthews said.

Serena Williams won’t be turning out for any T20 franchises any time soon though given how busy she is despite transitioning away from tennis.

Williams runs an investment empire alongside several other ventures.

She owns stakes in two major sports teams, investing in the Miami Dolphins with her sister and also being part of a consortium that funds the Los Angeles-based Angel City FC.

Williams has suggested that she might take up another sport that Barty has excelled at in the shape of golf. The sport is very popular with top tennis professionals with Rafael Nadal known to be handy on the links where he is often joined by Casper Ruud.

She says she hasn’t had the time to get out onto the course and get to grips with golf but hopes to tick it off her list sooner rather than later.

“I’m not golfing at all these days. Although I am definitely going to pick up golf as soon as I have time, which hopefully will be very soon,” she said.

Williams hasn’t had that much time to indulge her passions despite her transition away from playing tennis.

She says that she doesn’t believe that she has read a book since the birth of her daughter Olympia.

“I love reading, but ever since I had Olympia, I just don’t even think I’ve read a book,” the 23-time Major winner said. “But I do love reading. I absolutely love going to the movies, it’s my favorite thing, it shuts my brain off.”

Serena Williams has hinted that she may return to tennis at some point in the future.
