Serie A - Pescara fall to defeat at Catania

Catania recorded a comfortable 1-0 win over already relegated Pescara courtesy of a Alejandro Gomez strike.

The win moves the Rossazzurri up in to eighth position above Inter Milan and builds on an impressive season that has seen Rolando Maran’s men rack up more points than any other previous top-flight season.

The Delfini, who have endured a torrid season following last year’s promotion, were relegated already and only had one fan make the trip to Sicily as they fell to their 27th loss of the season.

Pablo Barrientos could have given the hosts a lead inside ten minutes, but, having shown an impressive sleight of foot inside the box, he dragged his effort wide.

That turned out to be the best chance of the first-half as the hosts were restricted to shots from distance for much of the remainder of the half.

Marco Biagianti then passed up a early gilt-edged chance in the second-half as it looked as though it was going to be one of those evenings for Maran’s men but Gomez allayed those fears when he slid in at the far post to give his side the lead in the 51st minute.

Ferdinando Sforzini had the best opportunity to restore parity moments after but his volley was straight at Mariano Andujar in the Catania goal.

Catania could have added to their advantage as the game drew to a close but a combination of profligacy and luck meant they had to settle for the one goal win.
