The forward arrived from Lille for £10.8 million in 2011, but after nine League goals in two seasons he reunited with his old Lille boss Rudi Garcia in Rome.

Gervinho has now blamed his former manager for the way that he played him out of position and limited his opportunities.

“I was not getting much time on the pitch and was in need of this time to improve and play my best football,” the Ivory Coast international told SunSport.

“Wenger was not prepared to give it to me. Also my position on the wing was not what I was expecting and I wasn’t happy with it.

“It would have helped had he shown more confidence in me.”
