The first half was almost entirely chance-free, with both sides reduced to speculative shots from distance. However, Inter were able to draw a number of fouls from Roma on Roma's right side, and put in a number of crosses from free kicks. It was from here that Dodo was able to set up the only goal of the half as VIdic glanced in a cross just before half-time.
Roma's plans were disrupted early as Leandro Castan was substituted in the first 15 minutes for Mehdi Benatia with an injury, and in the second half the pace of the game remained largely the same, with few chances save for Mattia Destro's header wide from just a few yards out.
Just after the hour mark both sides made numerous changes, which saw the quality of the match dip yet further, and Nagatomo took advantage of the disarray to grab Inter's second.
Both sides failed to truly spark as they are preparing for a season that remains relatively far off compared to the English sides in the competition, and that showed in the lack of urgency from both sides. Inter Milan were the better side, clearly, but that says little in a match of such questionable quality.
45+1' - VIDIC SCORES - After Inter win a foul on the left of the pitch, Dodo curls in a cross for Vidic to expertly glance by Lukazs Skorupski.
47' - DESTRO MISS - Alessandro Florenzi curls in a cross for Mattia Destro, just yards out and unmarked, but he powers his header wide - a dreadful miss.
64' - VIDIC HEADER - Vidic meets Dodo's corner, but he thumps it just over.
69' - NAGAMOTO SCORES - A loose ball flies across the box to Nagamoto lurking at the back post, and he rifles a shot into the roof of the net.
77' - GUARIN SHOT - Fredy Guarin skips into the box from the wing but scuffs his shot towards goal.
Is Serie A as unwatchable as this? It's hard to say because of the lack of fitness from both sides, but the lack of ambition, slow pace and utter lack of joy on the pitch was reminiscent of some of the most turgid football seen on Channel 4's Italian football coverage.
MAN OF THE MATCH
