Milan midfielder Kevin Constant was the target of racist abuse, with a banana being thrown at the Guinean midfielder – an incident similar to what happened to Barcelona’s Dani Alves against Villarreal earlier this season.
But in astonishing scenes, as Constant handed the banana to the referee, a knife could be seen sticking into the turf, just yards from where the players and officials were standing.
Following the match, the two managers reacted to the drama that brought Italian football culture into the spotlight once more.
"I can only compliment my players who continued to play and got on with their jobs. Hopefully, they will find the culprit and do what has to be done,” Milan boss Clarence Seedorf said.
Atalanta coach Stefano Colantuono was shocked by the section of his side’s fans, insisting that they “ruined” the match.
"The incident doesn't deserve any comments, it ruined a great afternoon,” he said.
