Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca has turned down Arsenal after the Premier League side made an offer for him, according to reports.

The Italy international joined Sassuolo in 2017 from Ajax’s second string before going on a series of loan deals to Cremonese, PEC Zwolle, Ascoli and Genoa.

He finally made his breakthrough into the first team at Serie A side Sassuolo this campaign, scoring 16 goals in 38 matches in all competitions.

Transfer gossip: Arsenal, Man United among nine clubs on the centre-half merry-go-round

There were reports in January that Arsenal would attempt to buy Scamacca after they missed out on signing Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaving the club to join Barcelona in the winter and Alexandre Lacazette confirming today that he will leave Arsenal at the end of the month, the Gunners are on the lookout for at least one new striker.

And now Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims that Arsenal made a €40m plus bonuses offer for Scamacca ‘in recent weeks’ with AC Milan and Napoli also interested.

The report adds that ‘the train stopped almost immediately’ on Arsenal as Scamacca ‘wants to give priority to any proposals from Serie A’ and intends to be ‘patient’.

Arsenal – who were recently boosted by reports that insisted Eddie Nketiah will sign a new deal at the Emirates Stadium – have also been linked with Victor Osimhen, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata as they continue their search for a new striker.

And former Premier League striker Noel Whelan reckons former Chelsea flop Morata would be a good signing for the Gunners.

“I think Arsenal would suit Morata, absolutely,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He ended up being a bit of a flop at Chelsea, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. He definitely still has a really dangerous presence.

“He’s got the stature that Arsenal need from a traditional number nine, he just needs the service. I think he’d certainly get a lot of chances with the talent Arsenal have – Saka, Odegaard, Smith Rowe.

“He would be something different that Arsenal haven’t had for a long time. I can see it working out well if they can convince him to come.”
