Zoff - who managed Di Matteo during his time at Lazio - believes the time is right for the sacked boss to return to Italy having become the latest manager to be chopped by owner Roman Abramovich.
“It’s a shame,” said former goalkeeper Zoff, who was impressed by Di Matteo's success in claiming the Champions League and FA Cup last season.
“He’s a man and a coach who knows what is going on. Getting sacked happens, but he is an exemplary professional and he’ll know how to pick himself back up.
“Di Matteo is ready for anything. It may have ended badly at Chelsea, but facing this Juventus side is not easy.”
