Sevilla 1-1 Roma LIVE! Penalty shootout - Europa League Final result, match stream, latest updates today

Sevilla vs Roma LIVE!

Sevilla beat Roma 4-1 on penalties on Wednesday to win the Europa League for a record-extending seventh time, handing Jose Mourinho his first defeat in six European finals.

Winning goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved spot kicks from Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez while Sevilla were flawless in their execution, scoring their first four. The game had finished 1-1 after extra time, which extended beyond 130 minutes due to much play-acting and injuries. There were 12 yellow cards, including to coaching staff.

Paulo Dybala gave the Italians the lead from a counter-attack in the 35th minute but Sevilla then took control of the game and found the equaliser thanks to an own-goal by Mancini in the 55th minute. The win means Sevilla will compete in next season's Champions League despite finishing outside the top four in the LaLiga. Read back the game below with our dedicated match blog.

Sevilla FC 5 - 2 AS Roma

Sevilla win the Europa League!

23:04 , Alex Young

So, Montiel has another chance, will he win it this time... YES!

It’s a magnificent seven for Sevilla!

23:03 , Alex Young

Oh wow, they are taking the Montiel penalty again!

23:03 , Alex Young

Montiel steps up to win it, just as he did for Argentina in the World Cup... but he’s DENIED!

Roma survive, but must score.

23:02 , Alex Young

Ibanez... HITS THE POST!

Sevilla to win if they score their next.

23:00 , Alex Young

Rakitic... SCORES!

23:00 , Alex Young

Mancini... DENIED! Bono saves with his foot!

Advantage, Sevilla.

22:59 , Alex Young

Lamela... scores!

22:59 , Alex Young

Cristante... scores!

All square are one apiece.

22:58 , Alex Young

First up Ocampos... SCORES!

22:57 , Alex Young

Right, here we go.

Bono and Rui Patricio share a hug.

22:55 , Alex Young

Both teams are in huddles, deciding he steps up.

Roma have taken off a lot of their first-choice takers - interesting.

Penalty time

22:54 , Alex Young

Look, it’s not been pretty, and I’m not sure we’ve had a recognisable ‘good chance’ for about an hour - but a penalty shootout is undefeated.

Let’s go.

End of extra time

22:52 , Alex Young

132min: We’re going to penalties!

22:52 , Alex Young

132min: Smalling hits the bar in the final seconds! It was looping up and bounced clear, but that was almost a bit of excitement.

22:50 , Alex Young

131min: Ocampos is now booked, I’m not even sure why at this point but I’m sure he deserved.

22:50 , Alex Young

130min: Free kick to Roma in the 130th minute... it’s floated in but Bounou punches clear.

22:49 , Alex Young

128min: Now Jordan is on for Fernando. Jordan has already been booked before getting on the pitch, which is impressive.

Surely not long to go now.

22:48 , Alex Young

127min: The clock keeps on ticking. We are beyond added time on extra time.

Marcao looks to be coming on for Sevilla, replacing Gudelj, who has certainly put in a shift.

22:45 , Alex Young

124min: Another Roma player is down in the area, and Montiel of Sevilla has been booked.

So many bookings, so few shots on target. Sums this game up.

22:43 , Alex Young

122min: Half a chance as En-Nesyri aims a tame header at goal which is easy pickings for Rui Patricio.

22:41 , Alex Young

120min: Now Matic’s night is over. Valpato is on for six minutes of added time.

22:38 , Alex Young

118min: Matic’s game looks to have been up, but he’s just ran back onto the pitch. What a warrior at 34 years old.

22:36 , Alex Young

116min: Tottenham fans must be getting horror flashbacks watching this Roma performance. So much more quality in the team to just be sitting back.

22:34 , Alex Young

113min: So many tired and nervous players out there, unwilling to take a risk. So many passed back to the keeper.

Mourinho tries to get involved with a throw in, and then pauses. Even he wants the game to quicken up.

22:31 , Alex Young

111min: Lamela goes into the book for an elbow on Ibanez. Just under 10 minutes until penalties.

22:29 , Alex Young

109min: Matic, who is somehow still standing, collides with Fernando and looks to come off worse.

Little in the way of goalmouth action.

22:27 , Alex Young

106min: Back underway for the second half of extra time.

22:24 , Alex Young

Barely a thing of note happened during those 15 minutes.

Maybe just skip to penalties now please?

Half-time!

22:23 , Alex Young

108min: That’s it.

22:21 , Alex Young

106mins: Two minutes added on.

22:21 , Alex Young

105min: Zalewski goes into the book. That’s Roma’s sixth yellow card, which is a Europa League Final record.

22:18 , Alex Young

101min: Sevilla have been so wasteful. Just two shots on target from 16 attempts in total as we approach half-time of extra time.

22:15 , Alex Young

98min: I guess it’s of no surprise, as we’re now in extra time, but the pace has slowed even further. Both teams doing lots of huffing and puffing but little else.

22:11 , Alex Young

95min: Yep, Rekik replaces Telles.

22:08 , Alex Young

93min: Sevilla starting extra time how they finished normal time, on the front foot.

Telles’ game may be over, though. He looks shattered and could be struggling with cramp.

Extra time begins

22:05 , Alex Young

91min: A change for Roma as Celik is replaced by Zalewski... and we’re underway for extra time.

End of 90 minutes!

22:01 , Alex Young

97min: It is! We are heading to extra time.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

22:00 , Alex Young

96min: Ooof! Heart-in-mouth time for Roma in the final seconds as Fernando drags a shot wide from the edge of the area.

That should be that for normal time...

21:58 , Alex Young

95min: Roma in no rush whatsoever. A couple minutes to play.

21:56 , Alex Young

93min: En-Nesyri meets a cross inside the area, but can’t direct it on target. Smalling was putting him under pressure, but that was a chance.

21:54 , Alex Young

91min: Six minutes added on.

21:51 , Alex Young

87min: Only one team trying to win this before extra time, and I’m sure you can guess who.

(It’s not Roma.)

21:47 , Alex Young

83min: So close from Belotti!

A smart free kick routine sees the ball dinked over the top and Belotti runs onto the ball to volley home, but he slightly mistimes and the ball spins wide.

21:46 , Alex Young

80min: Now Roma want a penalty after a cross appears to hits Fernando’s arm. Never happening.

21:43 , Alex Young

77min: Amongst all of that, Abraham was replaced by Belotti for Roma.

NO PENALTY!

21:41 , Alex Young

76min: Referee Anthony Taylor is told to give it another look, so he does. Ibanez does make contact with Ocampos, but is it enough to warrant a penalty? Taylor says, on second thoughts, no.

Ocampos made a meal of it, but there was contact... a tricky one.

PENALTY TO SEVILLA!

21:39 , Alex Young

75min: A huge moment!

21:37 , Alex Young

72min: Such an even game we have on our hands now. Suso tries to find Ocampos and Lamela inside the Roma area, but the Italians get a foot on the ball.

21:32 , Alex Young

68min: Dybala has been replaced by Wijnaldum.

21:31 , Alex Young

67min: So close! Pellegrini’s free kick delivery creates chaos in the area, with Abraham denied from a few yards out and then Cristante shoots wide.

21:30 , Alex Young

65min: It’s all getting very tetchy. Tackles flying in, complaining to the referee, managers moaning.

21:26 , Alex Young

61min: Dybala tries his luck with a free kick with a good 35 yards. Straight into the wall.

21:25 , Alex Young

58min: The atmosphere inside the Puskas Arena seems deafening.

Sevilla fans know their team is in the ascendency. Roma fans know their team must respond.

GOAL!

21:21 , Alex Young

55min: It's all square in Budapest!

Navas whips a cross into the area from the right-hand side, Ocampos dives for it, misses it, and Mancini turns the ball into his own net.

Now we’ve got a game.

21:16 , Alex Young

52min: The chances are starting to ramp up for Sevilla.

Lamela feeds a charging Telles into the area, but his shot is rushed and spins wide.

21:15 , Alex Young

49min: Rakitic goes for the spectacular with an overhead kick, but he mistimes the effort to see the ball fly high and wide.

Sevilla need a bit more than that, tonight.

Second half

21:09 , Alex Young

46min: A double change for Sevilla as Lamela and Suso replace Gil and Torres.

The second half is underway.

21:06 , Alex Young

As expected, not the most open game in the world but Roma have edged it.

A big second half to come.

(AP)

Half-time!

20:53 , Alex Young

52min: That’s your lot for the first half.

OFF THE POST!

20:52 , Alex Young

51min: I spoke too soon! Rakitic thumps the post plum on from about 25 yards, with the goalkeeper nowhere near it.

So close.

20:51 , Alex Young

49min: Roma players playing for half-time, Roma fans whistling for the referee to call it. Sevilla trying to muster something but just can’t work an opening.

20:46 , Alex Young

46min: SEVEN minutes added on.

20:46 , Alex Young

45min: Deary me. Roma do really well down the right flank through Dybala, who finds Pellegrini for a shot at goal - but he pauses, and pauses and then gets surrounded before throwing himself to the floor inside the area.

Booked for diving.

20:44 , Alex Young

43min: Oof, Ocampos throws himself at a whipped cross into the area but Mancini gets there first to force a corner.

Fernando gets to the delivery, but gets underneath the ball. He should have done better.

20:42 , Alex Young

41min: It’s park-the-bus time in Budapest.

20:40 , Alex Young

38min: It’s all getting very lively. Flares in the crowd, tough tackles going in on the pitch, a Sevilla coach has been booked.

GOAL!

20:38 , Alex Young

35min: Sevilla caught out as Dybala runs through onto Mancini's pass and slots home inside the area.

So easy and almost out of nothing.

20:33 , Alex Young

32min: Hold on, a VAR check for a penalty out of nowhere after Abraham hits the deck. Telles goes to clear the ball and collides with Abraham in the process - surely that’s not a penalty...

And, no, it isn’t. Weird one.

20:31 , Alex Young

30min: Pellegrini looks very lively down the flanks, keeping Gudelj busy on the half-turn.

Pause in play as a flare is thrown onto the pitch.

20:30 , Alex Young

28min: A few shouts from Jose on the touchline and Roma have started slowing the play down.

I’m not sure why, as they were edging it for me and Sevilla have barely laid a glove.

20:26 , Alex Young

25min: Sevilla starting to wake up and it’s that early ball from Navas again which was the Roma defence on its toes. Three climb for it and it’s inches away from Ocampos’ bonce, before Mancini heads clear.

20:23 , Alex Young

22min: First booking of the game as Matic leads with his arm into Ocampos. Looked harsh, to be honest, and Mourinho agrees.

20:20 , Alex Young

19min: Sevilla not showing too much threat quite yet, going for the odd long ball which Roma are easily taking care of.

20:18 , Alex Young

16min: Another stoppage as Telles and Celik battle for the same ball and the latter comes off worse.

He should be alright.

20:15 , Alex Young

13min: Roma are not messing around, which is pretty unlike Mourinho you have to say.

Spinazzola should have done better there, and his team continue to enjoy plenty of possession.

CHANCE!

20:13 , Alex Young

11min: Best chance of the game as Dybala finds Spinazolla unmarked inside the area, but his shot is too close to Bono.

Big chance.

20:10 , Alex Young

8min: An early ouchie for Dybala as he tries to get the ball off of Gil but only gets his toe trodden on instead.

20:09 , Alex Young

7min: A pause in play as Rakitic goes to take a corner but is pelted by objects from the nearby Roma fans. Nice bunch, then.

The corner is then sent in and a thumping Abraham header clears.

20:06 , Alex Young

4min: Gudeli will be fine as Sevilla launch their first chance, Navas sending an early cross into the box but Roma deal with it quite easily.

A fast pace to his game.

20:03 , Alex Young

2min: First chance to Roma as they win an early corner. Pellegrini whips it in, but Gudelj heads clear.

The defender looks to have hurt himself in the process.

Kick-off!

20:01 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

19:57 , Alex Young

You honestly can’t separate these two teams. Our match preview writer did, though, and has predicted a 1-0 win for Sevilla.

Me? I have a feeling Mourinho might do it, and probably by the same scoreline.

19:46 , Alex Young

Final preparations are almost complete as both sets of players head to their dressing rooms.

19:38 , Alex Young

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has been talking to the press.

“It’ll be difficult because they’re a team who make few mistakes and give little away. You have to beat them – rather than them losing – and try not to commit errors as they live off them.

“Mourinho’s a wily old fox in these contests and he tries to take the pressure off them to put it on us. I don’t know if Smalling, Dybala and Belotti are kids.

“So I don’t think this talk of favourites means much. We’ve got to a good moment after a very tough season. The coach has managed to convince the group of a concept and we’re defending that to the end.”

19:21 , Alex Young

Here’s the trophy being set up before the game.

Of course, that’s not the only prize up for grabs tonight. Arguably more important (I said, ‘arguably’), is that the winner will also qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Both clubs are unable to qualify via their leagues are inconsistent seasons. Roma have been in dreadful form of late and cannot finish higher than fifth, while Sevilla could miss out on Europe entirely if they don’t win tonight.

So, it's one change for Sevilla as Mendilibar replaces the suspended Acuna with Telles, on loan from Manchester United, at left-back.

It's two changes for Roma. Dybala and Smalling come in up front and in defence for Belotti and Bove.

18:49 , Alex Young

And here’s Roma! Dybala does start.

Sevilla XI

18:42 , Alex Young

Right on cue! Here’s how Sevilla look.

Early team news from Roma suggests that Dybala is going to start this evening.

We should get confirmed teams quite soon, as the stadium starts to fill up.

Mendilibar thrilled to face Mourinho

18:26 , Alex Young

Sevilla have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround under Jose Luis Mendilibar.

Joining in March with the club two points above the relegation zone, Mendilibar redefined 'new manager bounce' to take them to one point off seventh heading into this weekend's final game - far better form than Jose Mourinho's Roma over the same time. And now the 62-year-old is delighted to face one of the sport's greats.

"I told Mourinho I was delighted to play (against) him in a European final," he told Movistar Plus. "He has many, this is my first. I hope I've played as many finals as Mourinho when my career is over."

He added: "I'm calm. Maybe you don't believe me but I feel it's like one more game, preparing to face our rival with nothing special in mind. I know that there is a lot of expectation. The players want to play and we look forward to the challenge."

Mourinho: All the pressure is on Sevilla

18:10 , Alex Young

Jose Mourinho says all the pressure to win the Europa League final is on Sevilla, not his Roma side.

"For (Sevilla), playing in a Europa League final is almost normal, for us it is an extraordinary event," Mourinho said last night.

"For Sevilla fans, travelling to a European final is like travelling to a game in Spain; for us, however, it is something historic. So we want to make history.

"History doesn't play the game but history makes them the favourites, we respect it. They have the experience that we don't have, but we deserve to play this final, we have been saying that for a long time."

Oh, Jose. Never change.

17:57 , Alex Young

To say it’s lively in Budapest would be an understatement.

Thousands have made the trips from Seville and Rome for the game, which is the first European final to be held in Hungary since 1985.

Prediction

17:49 , Alex Young

Mourinho simply doesn’t lose European finals. He has yet to be outdone in five previous showpiece appearances on the continent. However, Sevilla are the absolute kings of this competition.

Neither team is in great form, with Sevilla having won none of their last three matches and Roma without a win in four since their semi-final first-leg defeat of Leverkusen, with a goalless draw in the return fixture enough to see them through.

Expect a tight, cagey affair likely to be settled by the odd goal, with Sevilla perhaps just shading it.

Sevilla to win, 1-0.

Roma team news

17:43 , Alex Young

For Roma, former England international Chris Smalling is fit after a hip problem and should line up in central defence.

Dybala appears to have shaken off long-standing ankle issues, though defenders Marash Kumbulla and Rick Karsdorp are both still out.

Tammy Abraham is set to spearhead the attack with Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini for support in a 3-4-3 system deployed by Jose Mourinho. Georginio Wijnaldum would be back-up should Dybala not make the line-up.

Sevilla team news

17:38 , Alex Young

Six-time Europa League champions Sevilla have travelled to Hungary with almost their full first-team squad, though Argentine World Cup-winning left-back Marcos Acuna is suspended after his extra-time red card in the semi-final second-leg win over Juventus earlier this month.

With Acuna out, Manchester United loanee Alex Telles seems the most likely option to step straight in at left-back as Sevilla boss Jose Luis Mendilibar faces some interesting selection choices elsewhere.

Fit-again defenders Marcao and Tanguy Nianzou are available after several weeks out, though both seem likely to have to make do with places on the bench.

Likewise Spanish midfielder Joan Jordan, while Marseille loanee Pape Gueye and Mexico winger Tecatito are both ineligible for Europa League duty.

Suso and Erik Lamela will both be pushing for starts after each scoring off the bench in the thrilling semi-final comeback win against Juventus.
