Basketball Hall of FamerShaquille O’Neal will cover funeral expenses for Malachi Hemphill, a 13-year-old Georgia teen who accidentally shot himself on social mediathis past week.
Hemphill was live streaming on InstagramMonday when he accidentally shot himself with a 9mm pistol. He died Wednesday andO’Neal, a metro Atlanta resident, was one of the first to offer his condolences.He visited the family to offer topay for Hemphill's funeral expenses.
"We just broke down and started crying because Malachi didn’t have any insurance," godmother Shantirea Bankston said, via WXIA in Atlanta. "We wasn’t prepared to bury him this young. We didn’t have insurance for him. So to have that from Shaquille O’Neal it was a blessing and very touching, and we appreciate everything he do for the community."
O’Neal, who is well-respected for his community involvement in the Atlanta area, offered this statement on Hemphill's death: "No mother should have to go through this. I can only imagine the pain that she and all of Malachi’s family must be feeling. I just wanted to do what I could to help them at such a terrible time."
