Ex-Premier League striker Teddy Sheringham has argued that Tottenham Hotspur would be wrong to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid this summer.

Bale has already had two spells at Spurs. He scored 26 goals in 44 games during the 2012/13 season.

This tempted Real Madrid to sign him for around £85m. He has helped them lift the Champions League on four occasions.

After falling down the pecking order, Bale was sent out on loan to Tottenham last season. He netted 16 times from his 34 outings across all competitions.

The Welshman is out of contract this summer and his agent – Jonathan Barnett – has confirmed that he will be leaving Real Madrid.

He admitted that a return to England for Bale is ‘likely’. A move to Cardiff City has also been mentioned, with Bale needing regular football if Wales qualify for this winter’s World Cup.

Sheringham is against the idea of Bale returning to Tottenham for a third spell:

“I don’t see Bale returning to Tottenham,” Sheringham said (quotes via The Evening Standard).

“He’s come back twice, I don’t know where Gareth Bale’s head is at the moment. He obviously likes playing for Wales, there’s problems at Real Madrid.

“I’d just love to see him playing football again on a regular basis.

“I don’t think he would play regularly at Spurs. When you look at their forward line and the players that are on the sub bench as well.

“I think they’ve definitely got two world-class players and then three or four, maybe even five players that could fit into a lot of Premier League teams so I don’t think Gareth, at this stage in his career, would command the regular starting place.”

According to The Telegraph, Antonio Conte is keen on bringing in ‘up to six’ new faces when the window opens.

One player said to be on the list is Aston Villa and Scotland midfielder John McGinn.

McGinn has been excellent for the Villans since they returned to the Premier League in 2019.

The 27-year-old still has three years left on his current deal with previous reports linking him with United stating that he would cost around £40m.
