Sherwood highlights key factor which could see Harry Kane leave Tottenham
Tim Sherwood has highlighted his concerns that Harry Kane could soon decide to leave Tottenham if a new contract isn’t agreed.
With 17 league goals already this season, Kane has been in fine form for Antonio Conte’s side and they will be desperate to keep him around.
Kane’s deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024 and there has been plenty of speculation surrounding his long-term future at the club.
Sherwood thinks that now Kane has beaten Jimmy Greaves’ record at the club, he might soon look for a fresh opportunity.
“He’s down to a year left of his contract at the end of the season and he has a big decision to make,” Sherwood told the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast.
“All of these players in the league are going to be rich when they finish playing, but when you start playing football it’s a team sport so you want to win.
“He’s won three Golden Boots already. He’s been the top scorer at the World Cup and he’s beaten Jimmy Greaves’ record at Tottenham, which is a little bit of a worry for the Tottenham fans because what else does he have to achieve there now?
“He loves the club and he wants to win at the club.”
Both Bayern Munich and Manchester United have been monitoring Kane’s current situation in North London.
With Conte also yet to commit his long-term future to Tottenham, the club finds itself in an awkward position.
When asked about his contract in January, Kane told reporters: “I’m sure they’ll be conversations over the coming months but to be honest I’m just focussed on this season and doing my best for the team.
“There’s still a lot to play for, trying to get in the Champions League, we have the FA Cup and the Champions League still to try to win. My focus is on that.
“I know there’s going to be rumours, a lot of talk and speculation about my future but I’m just focussed on what I can do.
“Of course I still want to win trophies for Tottenham Hotspur. That’s been my goal since I started playing first-team football with them.
“It hasn’t happened. I’ve been open about [how I feel about] that but I’ll continue to try to achieve that. We have a really good squad, a fantastic manager and there’s no reason why we still can’t be successful this season.
“We’ve just got to put everything we can into it and see where we are come May.”
Tottenham’s attention will turn back to the Premier League this weekend as they take on an out-of-form Chelsea side.
With a top four place to fight for along with the FA Cup and Champions League, Tottenham still have plenty to play for this season.
