Shields vs Marshall LIVE!

Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall renewed their rivalry in arguably the biggest women’s boxing match of all time in front of a sold-out O2 Arena in London with the undisputed middleweight championship of the world on the line.

This grudge clash was originally supposed to take place last month, only to be postponed following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It was American fighter Shields who came out on top after ten fantastic rounds in the capital, Marshall giving as good as he got but unable to match her rival’s stunning accuracy and energy.

A historic female-only card saw the undercard topped by Alycia Baumgardner claiming a controversial split decision win over Mikaela Mayer to become the unified super-featherweight champion. British Olympic stars Lauren Price, Caroline Dubois and Karriss Artingstall all claimed impressive wins. Follow Shields vs Marshall LIVE with Standard Sport’s fight night blog below!

Claressa Shields fights back the tears

23:24 , Marc Mayo

“I just wanna thank God. I had to work so hard for a very long time and nobody has given me credit. I couldn’t even see out of my right eye she hit so hard, so I wanna thank Savannah Marshall and her team - and the whole UK for being here. It’s not just a special moment for me but for women’s boxing. It’s an unbelievable moment right now.”

What a fight

Verdicts of 96-94, 97-93, 97-93 from the three judges. What a performance from the American, she goes 13-0.

Round 10

Into the final round.

Marshall is really digging deep to try and get that telling finish and claim the belts!

Shields tries to duck her way through the pressure but gets the body worked as a result, before pushing back with a good body hit of her own.

A tired, gruelling set of slugs are thrown but both make it out...

And that’s the bell!

Shields vs Marshall

23:14 , Marc Mayo

Round 9

A KO may be Marshall’s only way of winning this and she tops her opponent with a mammoth display of pressure early on.

Finally, Shields looks a bit flustered but she puts up the defences to get out of the round without any serious issues.

Shields vs Marshall

Round 8

Shields attempts to send a flurry towards Marshall but she wriggles away in time.

There’s a cut above Shields’ eye, likely from a clash of heads as they pour over each other hurling punches. Marshall looks for a big finish but, again, nothing major is knocking her opponent’s head back - and the bell goes.

Just four minutes left of this cracker.

Shields vs Marshall

Round 7

Shields surely ahead on points as the seventh begins, although the co-main event shows that may not always be a definitive sign of things to come...

Marshall pushes through a good right-hander before they almost drag each other to the canvas!

Pinning her rival against the ropes, she tries to pummel Shields into submission but that is far, far easier said than done.

Shields vs Marshall

23:05 , Marc Mayo

Round 6

You get the impression Shields could land a punch from 100 yards as she continues to punsh Marshall, the pair starting to grapple and scrap their way through the second half of the fight.

That should help Marshall, words exchanged as they clinch.

A massive right-hander lands from Shields in the final seconds of another breathless round! What warriors these two are.

Round 5

Marshall again gets Shields in a difficult part of the ring but the American is comfortable by the ropes and works out of it.

The crowd bellows as, with 30 seconds left, Marshall once more has Shields on the ropes before a beautiful left hook is perhaps the first time she lands a big shot home! Shields bagged a good hit in that exchange, too.

Shields vs Marshall

22:59 , Marc Mayo

Round 4

Approaching the halfway stage of this ten-round contest, a relatively calm round spills over past the bell with Shields unloading in the final moments.

“She’s slowing,” Marshall’s corner tell the shattered-looking Brit.

Shields vs Marshall

22:56 , Marc Mayo

Round 3

It is impossible to take your eyes of this fight!

Marshall gets Shields towards the corner but receives some uppercuts as she works her way out of it.

Great chin work from both but Marshall looks the more rattled, with Shields really in her groove. Those body shots will hurt in the morning.

Shields vs Marshall

22:53 , Marc Mayo

Round 2

Marshall is having to give as good as she gets and breaks through Shields’ defence with a convincing right jab early in the round.

Shields come back in the second half of the round though and lands a set of hefty combinations! She will take some beating...

Marshall’s corner ask for more movement during the break.

Round 1

Shields gets to work right away! A big early test for Savannah as the punches come fast... but she gets a barage back in by the corner!

A devastating start from the American and the crowd are getting right into this.

Shields vs Marshall

22:47 , Marc Mayo

Ding ding!

Referee Victor Loughlin signals the start of the contest!

Time to crown a new undisputed middleweight champion of the world.

Time for the national anthems

Savannah Marshall prowls the ring as ‘God Save The King’ plays out.

The US anthem gets, again, a few small jeers from the home fans.

Claressa Shields enters the O2

22:39 , Marc Mayo

A fashionably late entrance from the American, decked out in stars and stripes as a few pantomine boos ring around the arena.

Jadakiss’s ‘The Champ Is Here’ plays out - suitably so for the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBF middleweight belt-holder.

She throws herself into a nice little dance routine, too.

Ring walks!

22:35 , Marc Mayo

Here we go...

Savannah Marshall is first out after a tension-raising montage of training shots.

Accompanied by army drummers and Euros football hero Jill Scott, Hartlepool’s own steps out (although somebody turned the volume down a bit too much on those drummers).

‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’ plays out and the crowd lap it up, belting it around the O2.

Alycia Baumgardner on the fight

22:20 , Marc Mayo

“For all the doubters, I told y’all haters. I did that. I’m thankful. I’m blessed. I think I landed the cleaner shots, the harder shots. I was the harder puncher. I dig deep. I ain’t giving no rematch. I’m going after Troy. Undisputed is what I claim, it’s what I’m gonna do.”

22:17 , Marc Mayo

Some boos around the O2 Arena after that mighty close verdict.

Mayer naturally gutted as Baumgardner bounces around the ring in joy before posing with her new set of belts. Wow.

And the new, unified super featherweight champion of the world...

Mayer vs Baumgardner

22:11 , Marc Mayo

Round 10

More energy from Baumgardner in the flurries at this late stage but Mayer looks comfortable to bat them off and outbox her opponent.

No risks taken as she grapples her way to the bell, smiling at Baumgardner’s last throws of the dice.

To the judges...

Mayer vs Baumgardner

22:09 , Marc Mayo

Round 9

Punches flying left, right and centre in another tight round. Tough to score that one but Mayer is probably still be in front.

This one could be very worth a rematch, no matter how it ends!

Mayer vs Baumgardner

22:05 , Marc Mayo

Round 8

Mayer’s corner work on that cut above the right eyebrow in the break, that shouldn’t cause much trouble having come from a clash of heads.

A sweet uppercut from Baumgardner keeps her in the fight - a good finish can rescue what is looking like a points defeat for the younger of the two Americans.

Just four minutes left of this co-main event...

Mayer vs Baumgardner

22:02 , Marc Mayo

Round 7

There is the comeback from Baumgardner and Mayer has a bloodied right eye as she takes a pair of jabs square on the nose!

But Mayer lets fly as the bell approaches, pinning her rival in the corner before heading back to her corner probably having lost that round.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:59 , Marc Mayo

Round 6

Both fighters showing a steely chin in this super featherweight contest but Mayer’s superiority in height and reach are really beginning to tell.

A tight round as we head towards a conclusion, Baumgardner needs to make something happen if she wants to turn the tide.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:57 , Marc Mayo

Round 5

A sweet right-hander rocks Baumgardner’s head back before Mayer settles in, absorbing her opponent’s threat and putting her on the defensive.

Baumgardner now knows what happens if she comes forward too hard, the counters are too dangerous. And that’s put Mayer on top.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:54 , Marc Mayo

Round 4

That left jab by Mayer is starting to show some dominance and the round ends very strongly for the 32-year-old, sending a good one through to her opponent’s cheek.

She has Baumgardner up against the ropes! But the bell calls an end to the round. A fascinating contest.

Who will be next to light the touch paper?

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:51 , Marc Mayo

Round 3

Baumgardner the bouncier, both verbally and physically, before Mayer starts to ramp up her aggression.

A bit of slugging at the end sees Baumgardner land the best blow of the round.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:47 , Marc Mayo

Round 2

Baumgardner throws a few early sledges as they stand off each other, Mayer steely-faced in opposition as the fight finally breaks into the first barrage with 50 seconds left.

No serious blows landed on either body but perhaps Mayer came off worse.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:45 , Marc Mayo

Round 1

Far from the sparks of the weigh-in, the champions face each other down in a calm, measured opening round of 10.

Mayer will certainly be the more back-foot of the duo, let’s see how Baumgardner can shake her up as the fight pans out.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

The co-main event gets underway...

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:38 , Marc Mayo

Mel C sent a good luck message to Mayer before the fight and ‘Spice Up Your Life’, complete with backing dancers, accompanies her ring walk.

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:37 , Marc Mayo

Baumgardner enters the ring first donning a black-and-blue sequined hoodie and shorts.

A retiring smile on the American’s face, she positively bops towards the ring. The woman known as ‘The Bomb’ is the underdog tonight but she was against Terri Harper as well...

Mayer vs Baumgardner

21:33 , Marc Mayo

A proper title clash coming up, the full set of world super featherweight belts are on the line.

Lauren Price gives her take on that win

21:16 , Marc Mayo

“I thought I boxed alright, working on picking my shots. Still stuff to work on but overall not a bad performance. Caught her with some big shots and I could see it in her face, she’s a tough girl. Credit to her.”

Price vs Belik

21:12 , Marc Mayo

Round 4

It’s over!

The referee waves it off, not after a barrage of blows but with Price just so dominant it looked like an injury wasn’t far off.

The Hungarian and her corner are not happy - there is no arguing that, though.

Price vs Belik

21:10 , Marc Mayo

Round 3

Belik is struggling to hand off the impressive combinations coming from Price and she makes the bell by the skin of her teeth as the referee peers in for a closer look...

En route for another dominant display from a British prospect here, tonight has so far been a real showcase of the homegrown talent coming through the ranks.

Price vs Belik

21:06 , Marc Mayo

Round 2

Absolute lightning hands from Price, even if she prefers to fight from a single spot rather than dart around her opponent.

The power is there in abundance though as she dominates another round.

Price vs Belik

Round 1

Price a disruptor to Belik’s defences already in a gradual opening that explodes into the odd flurry. Good stuff from the Team GB hero.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

“It was amazing, it really was. I want to thank everyone who turned up today! I did [want the KO], I was sparring really well - against girls heavier than me. So I had confidence. I knew turning pro that I was just as good as any girl. And I’m 21, I’m gonna learn every day.”

Dubois vs Koleva

20:39 , Marc Mayo

Round 5

It’s all over!

Dubois takes the win with a stoppage in the final seconds of the round, the referee waving it off after a fine slug-fest in the corner. Tremendous boxing from the 21-year-old.

Remember the name - but let’s face it, you knew it anyway!

Dubois vs Koleva

20:36 , Marc Mayo

Round 4

Koleva hits the canvas!

The count gets to seven with that not exactly a clean hit from Dubois, more with her forearm than anything. The Bulgarian survives, can she last much longer?

Dubois vs Koleva

20:32 , Marc Mayo

Round 3

Dubois’ corner are as vocal as they come and roar with a delightful hook from the Brit, which Koleva manages to shrug off and come back with spare change as she gets the limbs pumping.

Nothing lands on Dubois though and we reach the halfway stage of the fight.

Dubois vs Koleva

20:29 , Marc Mayo

Round 2

An early stumble from the Bulgarian does not count as a knockdown before she is put on a knee at the halfway mark.

A lovely, left uppercut breaks through the Koleva defences with Dubois’ opponent all over the place as she looks to lay a glove.

Artingstall vs Sakharov

Round 4

Will she settle in for a highly likely decision win or can she muster a telling blow?

Artingstall vs Sakharov

19:57 , Marc Mayo

Round 3

All of the aggression coming from Artingstall with some impressive combinations keeping her on top in points terms at least, no definitive KO blow yet though as the bell goes for the halfway stage.

Artingstall vs Sakharov

Round 2

Another commanding round from the Brit, who gently ups the ante until a flurry has Sakharov flailing in the final minute.

Postponement a ‘blessing in disguise’ for Shields

19:15 , Marc Mayo

Claressa Shields has described the decision to postpone tonight’s fight amid the death of Queen Elizabeth II as a move that could benefit her.

He said: “The postponement was like a blessing in disguise. The goal is even bigger now, from September to now. I knew I was going to beat Savannah Marshall on September 10.

“But now I really feel in my spirit that I am going to knock Savannah Marshall out, this is going to be my statement fight.”

KO power scares Shields, says Marshall

19:02 , Marc Mayo

Savannah Marshall believes Claressa Shield is scared of her power going into Saturday’s blockbuster undisputed bout at the 02 Arena.

Marshall is not particularly impressed with Shields’ professional record, with only two of her wins coming by stoppage, and she is confident that her greater power will prove to be the difference.

“You couldn’t knock Ema Kozin out, couldn’t knock Hannah Rankin out,” Marshall told her opponent. “12-0 as a pro and you haven’t learned to finish anyone. That’s concerning, you haven’t learned.

“’You’re gonna knock me out, you’re gonna knock me out?’ You keep asking because it’s in the back of your mind, you’re petrified that I’m going to knock you out and that’s why you keep asking and keep going on and on.”

Weigh-in results

17:48 , Marc Mayo

Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall both weighed-in at 159.3lbs on Friday afternoon, comfortably inside the middleweight limit.

Evening Standard fight prediction

17:42 , Marc Mayo

Boxing promoters are never shy in using the phrase ‘50-50 fight’, but this looks to be a bout worthy of that title.

The loss to Marshall was Shields’ only defeat as an amateur and since then it’s been a perfect run in the professional ranks, with ten of those 12 wins coming on points. It’s five years since she last knocked a fighter out.

It’s a record that is flipped for Marshall, who has been taken the distance only twice in her 12 bouts as a pro. She was typically destructive in taking out Femke Hermans in April, a fighter who went the full ten round with Shields four years ago.

Similarly Marshall stopped Rankin, who was beaten on points by Shields earlier in her career. The American will of course argue that she faced those two when they were better fighters, and that her record is a far more impressive one considering the strength of opponents.

It’s certainly a big step up for Marshall, who for all her exciting talent has not been fighting at the elite level for as long as Shields. The big question is whether her power is enough to slow Shields down and stop the technical ability of the American taking control.

The quality of both fighters means a knockout win for either is perhaps unlikely, so we’re going for Shields to just edge a thrilling fight on points.

Mayer vs Baumgardner headlines undercard

17:34 , Marc Mayo

A fantastic undercard finishes off with Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner doing battle in the ring.

The unified super featherweight titles are at stake with the pair showing their rivalry at a full-blooded weigh-in.

Baumgardner has attacked California-born Mayer for benefitting from greater “resources” and “income” during her career.

The 32-year-old hit back: “She seems very emotional, she seems to hate me a lot, probably because she's been wanting to fight me for a long time because I've always been the No1 girl of this division in the amateurs and now in the pros.”
