Shinya Aoki to Defend Lightweight Title Against Eduard Folayang at ONE: Defending Honor

Shinya Aoki will make the third defense of his lightweight title in the main event of ONE: Defending Honor. The Japanese veteran faces Eduard Folayang on Nov. 13 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Aoki (39-6-0-1) hasn’t fought for ONE Championship in 18 months, but is coming off of a TKO win over Kazushi Sakuraba at Rizin FF’s inaugural event. He won the belt by beating Kotetsu Boku in 2013 and has made successful defenses against both Kamal Shalorus and Koji Ando.

His opponent headlined ONE Championship’s first ever show and has remained one of the most popular fighters on the roster. Folayang (16-5) is coming off of back-to-back decision wins and earned the title shot by beating top contender Adrian Pang in his most recent fights.

Folayang has fought nine times for ONE Championship and beaten the likes of Tetsuya Yamada, Kotetsu Boku, and A Sol Kwon. He was initially scheduled to fight for the title in 2012, but missed out after losing to Lowen Tynanes on a URCC card.

It took the Filipino another four years to work back into title contention, but Folayang has a big fan following and will have plenty of supporters in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. To win the belt, he’s going to need to break Aoki’s nine-fight winning streak, which stretches back to 2012.

Aoki has fought five times for ONE Championship and has a 100-percent winning record for the promotion. He’s also enjoyed success competing for Japanese promotions like Dream, IGF and Rizin during this period.
