Simone Inzaghi is reportedly being eyed up as one of the leading contenders to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United – Liverpool’s rivals, though, could be set for major disappointment.

Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford looks in serious danger after yet another heavy defeat on Sunday, with United losing 3-0 at home to Tottenham. The Red Devils have won just three of their opening eight games across all competitions this season, and are showing little sign of improvement after last season’s eighth-place finish in the Premier League.

Having spent big once again in the summer transfer window, United had been backed by some pundits – most notably Gary Neville – to finish above Liverpool and earn a top-four finish this season. Just six games into the league campaign though, those predictions are already aging badly.

According to BBC Sport and other sources, United is set to stick with Ten Hag for its matches against Porto and Aston Villa this week. Those two games could well decide the Dutchman’s future, and it seems a replacement may have already been identified.

The Daily Star claims that the club’s minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is interested in securing Inzaghi from Inter Milan, with former England boss Gareth Southgate also under consideration.

Inzaghi has been in charge at Inter since 2021, and has led them to six trophies during his time at the San Siro, including last season’s Serie A title. He also guided them to the 2023 Champions League final, where they were narrowly defeated by Manchester City.

It’s not the first time the 48-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League. In fact, he was one of the first names to be linked with the Liverpool job after Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement that he would be leaving the club in January.

The links though were fairly quickly dismissed by Inter’s top brass, and the man himself indicated he could extend his contract with the club. Speaking on his future back in March (via GOAL), Inzaghi said: "I'm happy here at Inter, I feel good with board and fans. About my contract, we're gonna meet after this season to discuss the extension but the relationship is really great. Talks will be good."

Indeed, Inzaghi went on to sign a new deal in July, keeping him at the San Siro until 2026. Given that decision, it would be a strange U-turn if he were to make the move to United, just a few months after dedicating his future to Inter.
