Sir Alex Ferguson is out of intensive care after undergoing emergency brain surgery at the weekend.

The Manchester United legend will continue his rehabilitation as an inpatient at Salford Royal Hospital, the club have announced.

Ferguson suffered a brain haemorrhage on Saturday and was put in an induced coma by doctors after his life-saving operation.

United this evening (Wednesday) confirmed via a statement released on Twitter that their former manager was recovering well.

The statement read: “Sir Alex no longer needs intensive care and will continue rehabilitation as an inpatient.

“His family have been overwhelmed by the level of support and good wishes but continue to request privacy as this will be vital during this next stage of recovery.”

Ferguson, 76, retired as United boss in May 2013 after winning 38 trophies during a glittering career.

He is widely regarded as the greatest manager of all time after dominating the football landscape for decades.

Earlier in the day, current Red Devils coach Jose Mourinho reassured supporters over the health of the Scot.

“It’s private. His family asked for privacy and that’s what I’m going to respect,” Mourinho said.

“[The club] are positive, they are very positive. We are confident.”

Waking from his coma

Today reports emerged of Ferguson’s first words upon wakening from his coma.

And it seems you can take the man of football but you cannot take football out of the man as Ferguson’s first thoughts were to check on one particular score.

He asked: “So, how did Doncaster get on?”

Sir Alex’s son Darren manages League One Doncaster Rovers and they played host to champions Wigan on Saturday, losing 1-0 to the Lactics.
