Olympian Sir Mo Farah has offered a message of support to a man running 110 marathons in 110 days.

Gary McKee, from Cumbria, is performing the epic feat to raise money for two local charities, Macmillan Cancer Support Cumbria and West Cumbria Hospice.

In a video message McKee posted on Twitter, Sir Mo says: ‘I just wanted to tell you, you’ve gotta get behind this great man.

‘Gary McKee is running 110 marathons in 110 days. That’s incredible to run that many marathons to raise money for charity. So let’s get behind him and support him – and Gary, well-done mate, keep it going. We’re behind you all the way.’

Sir Mo, best known for his Olympic performances in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, has also found success in longer distances, finishing fifth at the 2019 London Marathon. In 2020 he ran as a pacemaker for the elite-only event last year, as well as breaking the men’s one-hour record in September.

Gary ran his first marathon on February 1, and hopes to complete his 110th on May 21. Though he initially hoped to raise £10,000, he has since raised over £55,000.

On his fundraising page, Gary writes: ‘Covid has had an impact on all of us but none more than on charities. Please join me on my journey and help me raise as much money and awareness as possible.’

Speaking to Cumbria Crack Gary said, ‘People have said I’m mad to do it again but it wouldn’t be called a challenge if it was easy.’

‘I’ve done it once before so I know what to expect. There will be tough times and injury niggles but if you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything,’ he said.

‘The more money raised, the more people we can help. I’m not a runner, I’m a fundraiser.’
