The red-hot German set a new hill record in Falun on Wednesday and he did not miss a beat in Finland either, with a monster first jump of 131 metres.
His second attempt was a more modest 127.5m but despite Stefan Kraft's event-best 134m, Freund beat the Austrian by nine points overall.
Kamil Stoch took both spoils in the large hill and normal hill at Sochi 2014 but had to settle for third place with efforts of 127m and 124.5m.
However, the Pole is now just seven points behind leader Peter Prevc, who finished fourth, in the World Cup standings.
And the margin between the two in Lahti was even smaller, as Stoch held off Prevc by 0.2 points.
