Smith fails to qualify for Olympics

Britain's men’s boxing team at this summer’s Olympics will remain at seven fighters after the luck of the draw at European qualifying tournament evaded Callum Smith.

Smith, who turns 22 on Monday, could have joined Anthony Ogogo and Josh Taylor in earning Olympic selection in Turkey if he reached the light heavyweight final.

But he lost a tight semi-final 16-14 to Vatan Huseynli with his chances of representing Britain at London 2012 then resting on the Azerbaijan fighter beating Turkey’s Bahram Muzaffer in the final.

However that wasn’t to be the case as Muzaffer recorded an 18-12 victory over Huesynli to end Smith’s hopes of earning one of the last three available European quota places there and then.

Britain’s interest in the European qualifying tournament ended with a relative damp squib as Ogogo pulled out of the middleweight final with another Turkish fighter Adem Kilicci.
