White, in fact, took a scrappy first frame with runs of 29 and 27 but the world number four responded in fine fashion with breaks of 57 and 129 to take a one frame lead.
Murphy took a decisive scrappy fourth before rattling off frames five and six with runs of 46 and 87 to progress to the next round.
Elsewhere, Fergal O’Brien held his nerve to take a 46-minute deciding frame to beat Ricky Walden.
O’Brien had led 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 but Crucible semi-finalist Walden pegged him back each time to set up a tense finale - in which the world number 36 held his nerve to progress.
Mark Selby came from 3-0 and 4-3 down to seal his progress against Ian Burns and ensure his participation in the second round.
