Selby, a finalist in the event last year, beat Stuart Carrington 5-3, while in-form Murphy knocked out Jamie Cope 5-1 on a day when all the favourites came through unscathed.

The biggest surprise of the day came as world number 22 Michael Holt lost 5-1 to world number 80 Craig Steadman.

Murphy played some of the best snooker of the day in his easy win.

"Snooker is never easy," said Murphy, won in his last outing in China at the Haikou World Open. "I knew I had to be good from the start and I played OK.

"To win back to back tournaments here is very difficult. Of course Ding Junhui has done it already, he's won four tournaments this season so it can be done. All I can do is to concentrate on my next game."

Ali Carter whitewashed Jamie Jones 5-0, though the match was harder than the scoreline suggested as Carter was restricted to a top break of 59.

"I played well today against a very good player," said Carter. "I've been practising hard leading up to the World Championship. It's been a tough season for me so I'm pleased to be here and guaranteed to be at the Crucible.

"Every match I win here is a good building up for the World so it's nice to dig deep and get myself match fit - I'm really enjoying myself."

Former world champion Mark Williams came through his match against Anthony McGill 5-3 and will face Neil Robertson in the next round.

"Towards the end of the match today we both played very well," said Williams.

"There were some big breaks and not many balls missed. I'll just try my best tomorrow. Neil is a top player and world number one so it will be a tough game for me.

"If you are going to do well in competitions you have to beat players like that.

"Obviously it's the toughest draw I can get and hopefully I can play well and give him a good game."
