Soccer Aid 2020: Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney to manage England in charity match

Wayne Rooney will manage England at Soccer Aid for Unicef at Old Trafford this September.

England's all-time top scorer will take to the Old Trafford dugout alongside Sam Allardyce, who has been named co-manager, while David Seaman has been appointed goalkeeping coach.

The match will be held behind closed doors in line with the "government's advice and stringent health and safety protocols", with testing to be overseen by Prenetics, the company used in professional football.

This year's team comprised of celebrities and former players will ‘Play for Generation Covid’, which aims to help stop the spread of coronavirus and diminish the negative impacts on children's lives.

A number of former players and celebrities have already confirmed their involvement, including Patrice Evra, Yaya Toure, Robbie Keane and comedian Jason Manford.

“Taking part in Soccer Aid for Unicef is something I have wanted to do for many years," Rooney said.

"Previously, I have never been able to make the dates work, but this year was obviously different.

"I was enormously proud to be asked to manage the England team and although there will be no fans at the match, it is always special to go back to Old Trafford."

The match will be aired on ITV, with every £1 donated until October 6 to be tripled thanks to the both the UK government and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance.
