Social Chatter: Amir Khan takes it on the chin, and who will make the Champions League

James Matthews discovers widespread support on social media for Amir Khan despite his weekend defeat, but uncertainty over who will make the Champions League.

Amir Khan may have been chinned on Saturday, but social media was full of support for the battered and bruised star.

The decision to jump two weight divisions to fight Saul Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas proved to be a flawed one…or should that be floored.

Khan was left flat out on the canvas after being knocked out in the sixth round of the WBC middleweight title fight.

Despite the crushing defeat, Khan tweeted in the aftermath of the fight to let fans know his wellbeing.

It may seem a case of stupidity jumping two divisions to take on Canelo, but the boxing world rallied behind Khan and lauded his bravery in taking the fight in the first place.

Contemporaries Tyson Fury, Andre Ward and Tony Bellew, not to mention UFC star Conor McGregor, were all full of praise for the beaten star.

Who next for Khan? A rematch with Danny Garcia for the WBC welterweight belt is most likely, but Kell Brook has already called out Khan for a big British bout.

In a bizarre twist, some fans likened Khan’s performance to that of Premier League Arsenal.

And that fight for third and fourth place in the Premier League will go down to the final weekend of the season for Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

A victory for United on Saturday coupled with a 2-2 draw between City and Arsenal 24 hours later means the battle for fourth place is in the hands of Louis van Gaal’s men.

Arsenal still look on course to finish in third place, but it will all go down to the wire.

Despite Arsenal now needing just a point from their final game to guarantee another season of Champions League football, it didn’t stop Piers Morgan putting the boot in…again.

The one thing we do know is that it is now out of Manchester City’s hands. Could Pep Guardiola take over at the Etihad Stadium and not have Champions League football?
