Social Chatter: Has Arsene Wenger resigned as Arsenal manager yet?

James Matthews gets the reaction on social media to Arsenal’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Watford.

Has Arsene Wenger resigned as Arsenal manager yet? That was the question being asked on social media after his side’s FA Cup exit on Sunday.

The winners of the FA Cup for the last two seasons suffered a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Watford as their winning run in the competition came to an abrupt end.

With Arsenal also faltering in the Premier League title race and facing elimination from the Champions League this week when they visit Barcelona in the Round of 16 second leg, the defeat heaped more pressure on Wenger.

The regular cries for the Frenchman to quit the Emirates on the back of a defeat followed - with key critic Piers Morgan leading the calls for his departure after the loss to Watford.

It was actually a tirade of tweets from Morgan.

Those thoughts were echoed by many Arsenal fans on social media, and Lord Sugar couldn’t resist putting the boot in on his old sparring partner Morgan.

The breakfast TV presenter was quick to comeback though, using his response to dish out more criticism of Wenger.

BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker even weighed into the argument, pointing out what is next for Arsenal - that daunting trip to Barcelona where they need to overturn a 2-0 deficit at the Nou Camp.

It wasn’t just Morgan who thinks Wenger’s time is up though.

Comedian Alex Brooker described the Gunners as “a joke” with Wenger seemingly unsackable as Arsenal boss.

Arsenal fans were in for plenty of trolling too from their rivals.

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy, now a radio presenter, was quick with his put down after a season in which the Blues have taken their fair share of abuse.

And with that Premier League title bid stuttering, Arsenal now out of the FA Cup and facing a gigantic mountain in the Champions League, one tweet summed up the time of year it is…the annual disappointment time.
