New Zealand’s All Blacks created history by becoming the first team to win the Rugby World Cup three times and the first to lift the Webb Ellis Cup in successive tournaments.

And after the defending champions’ triumph over Australia in the final at Twickenham on Saturday, the claim that this All Blacks team is the greatest ever seen was trending, with almost 130,000 tweets suggesting they are.

To underline the point, New Zealand’s last defeat at a Rugby World Cup came back in 2007.

England’s World Cup winner Matt Dawson doubts any team will ever reach the level that this group of All Blacks have achieved over the last two tournaments.

Even David Hasselhoff was impressed - branding the All Blacks and man of the match Dan Carter “Hofftastic”.

Carter, who had missed the 2011 World Cup Final victory because of injury, was the star man on the pitch for the All Blacks. And the legendary goalkicking machine was labelled the greatest himself too.

And the praise was widespread, from former team-mates and the wider sporting world.

But perhaps the story of the final was Sonny Bill Williams giving his winners’ medal away to a young All Blacks fan who had tried to get onto the pitch to join the victory celebrations.

SBW intervened when the youngster was tackled by stewards, before giving him the medal after leading him back to the stands.
