SOCIAL CHATTER: Louis van Gaal out, Jose Mourinho in at Manchester United...Twitter predicts
James Matthews finds social media tipping one under-fire manager to be replaced by another who has just lost his job.
Louis van Gaal appears to be on borrowed time as Manchester United. A 2-1 home defeat to Norwich City could well be the final nail in the coffin, with the Dutchman even admitting himself his time could well be up.
He has overseen a run of six games without a victory - United’s first in a long, long time - and it’s tough to argue against that.
It didn’t take long for talk of Van Gaal’s successor to surface. And the number one contender to take a seat that hasn’t yet been vacated is a man who has just lost his own job - Jose Mourinho.
Sacked by Chelsea on Thursday, Mourinho immediately ruled out taking a break from football.
And that started tongues wagging (and keyboards typing) about him replacing Van Gaal.
Michael Owen, meanwhile, threw Van Gaal’s assistant Ryan Giggs’ hat into the ring along with Mourinho.
Sky News reporter Kay Burley revealed that United fans were already chanting the Special One’s name during the defeat to Norwich City.
And many journalists - and actor David Schneider - believe it is a case of when rather if it happens.
Serial tweeter Piers Morgan even posed the thought that Mourinho could yet lead United to the Premier League title this season.
One man almost certainly is out of the frame, with Pep Guardiola set to be named as Manchester City’s new manager from next season - a major loss for United according to former defender Rio Ferdinand.
Even Manchester United squad man Nick Powell is getting caught up in it all.
Powell liked a tweet in which Tony Cottee criticised Van Gaal for wasting money.
But the striker later pleaded his innocence, claiming he had liked the post by mistake. That should get him back in the first-team then!
