Social Chatter: Mesut Ozil abused for going missing, Andy Murray celebrated

Mesut Ozil was the man hit with the vast majority of blame after his Arsenal side were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

While Twitter and social media lavished praised on British tennis star Andy Murray following his record third BBC Sports Personality award, Ozil was the butt of plenty of jokes.

Despite taking an early lead thanks to a fifth minute strike from Theo Walcott, Arsenal conceded twice after the break as they slipped further adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

And there was no doubting who the world deemed the culprit to be for City’s victory - the missing-in-action Ozil.

City themselves had been at the centre of amusement on social media over their tribute to injured star Ilkay Gundogan. He hadn’t died after all.

But Ozil’s performance took things to another level.

Even the television pundits were critical of the performance from the German international.

While Ozil was being made fun of, there was little arguing on social media over the result of BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award as Murray was named the winner for a record third time.

The facts spoke for themselves in what has been a glorious year - becoming a parent for the first time, winning Wimbledon again, securing another Olympic gold and ending the season as world number one after landing the ATP Tour title.

He was the only sportsperson who could win it right?
