Social Chatter: Undroppable Wayne Rooney to be dropped by England?

James Matthews gets the lowdown on social media to England captain Wayne Rooney’s future in the national team.

Is “undroppable” Wayne Rooney about to be dropped by England? It could be about to happen.

Captain Rooney turned in what fans felt was another lacklustre performance in England’s 2-0 win over Malta on Saturday as new manager Gareth Southgate kept faith with the Manchester United star.

But, after flattering to deceive again in a defensive midfield role, Rooney was booed off at Wembley despite the victory.

And could Southgate become the first manager brave enough to drop Rooney from the England starting line-up?

It seems so, with Jordan Henderson, who outshone Rooney in midfield against Malta with a man-of-the-match performance, or Gary Cahill in line to take over the captain’s armband against Slovenia on Tuesday.

Sky Sports and Talksport presenter Jim White had the scoop.

Ironically, Rooney had posted to his Instagram account after the win over Malta how much he was looking forward to Tuesday’s game. Maybe not now though.

England fans had been widespread in their belief that Rooney’s time was up and he failed to make a significant impact against a lowly-ranked Malta side.

He did see a shot from the edge of the penalty area well saved in the opening exchanges, but there was little else to make him stand out from the crowd.

Some fans wondered if he might be undroppable regardless of how poorly he played in an England shirt.

Another England fans thought the Manchester United factor might well be the reason he remains in the national team, and captain of it for that matter too.

The first move needed, according to one fan, is to replace him as the England captain - something that looks like happening against Slovenia.

The next is to put an actual midfielder in the side in place of Rooney.

But Rooney’s old United team-mate Rio Ferdinand was among those to come out in support of the England captain.

Ferdinand was critical of England fans for booing their own captain despite the victory over Malta.

So, if Rooney is dropped against Slovenia, will it be Henderson or Cahill to become captain?
