Social media up in arms over removal of McDonald’s all-day breakfast: ‘I thought the customer comes first’

McDonald’s’ decision to remove its all-day breakfast has caused quite the commotion on Twitter.

According to Fox News, the fast food restaurant got rid of its menu toward the end of March, following a pandemic that has ravaged the U.S. A spokesperson explained to the network that the chain did so in order “to simplify operations in our kitchens, which we say provided better service and order accuracy.”

But social media users have not been particularly pleased with the restaurant’s decision. On Sept. 16, a Twitter user with the handle sKERTttt, for example, shared her grievances with her followers in jest but seemingly without any regard for the larger crises — the pandemic and police brutality, to name a few — at hand.

“WHY DID MCDONALDS TAKE AWAY ALL DAY BREAKFAST?!?!?” she wrote. “WHY DO THEY ACT LIKE THEY DONT HAVE A MCGRIDDLE IN THE BACK THEY CAN MAKE ME?!?! WHY AM I ALIVE IN 2020?!?!”

Another user added to the disappointment.

“I thought the customer comes first,” the user wrote. “I enjoyed the all-day breakfast and would like to see it return.”

In response to the original tweet, McDonald’s replied with the same statement it gave Fox while adding that it wanted to ensure that its “improvements” in “speed of service” and “order accuracy” would remain “consistent before reintroducing additional menu items.”

Still, at least one McDonald’s employee reportedly told Business Insider that he has seen customers leave the drive-thru lane angrily after learning about the menu’s removal. Despite the backlash, the unnamed employee, along with several franchisees, told the publication that they would rather not see the menu return.

“I absolutely do not think we should bring it back,” the employee admitted. “It makes us faster and gives the grill less to worry about.”

The all-day breakfast menu was introduced in 2015 and almost instantly became a hit among customers — same-store sales allegedly increased by nearly 6 percent during the quarter the chain rolled the menu out.

McDonald’s has yet to confirm whether the menu will be gone for good, instead claiming it would “evaluate” next steps.

“Any final decision will be made in partnership with our franchisees, based on consumer demand, and designed to drive the business while minimizing operational disruptions,” the fast food chain said in a statement to Business Insider.
