Somerset knocks off Knox Central, falls to Boyle County

Mar. 21—The Somerset baseball Jumpers were on a roll to kick off their 2024 campaign after winning their first three games. They continued that streak on Tuesday with a close win at Knox Central, before dropping their first game of the season on Wednesday against Boyle County.

After falling behind 6-1 early, the Jumpers rallied in their Tuesday contest against the Panthers, scoring a run in the seventh inning to win their fourth-straight game 10-9. Caynon Sizemore and Connor Roberts each led the way in the game with three RBI's apiece, with Griffin Loy, Kole Grundy and Isaiah Lewis each batting in one RBI each. Sizemore also hit two doubles in the win, with Cayden Cimala and Roberts also each hitting a double. Bryson Stevens earned the win, pitching three innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts, while Roberts earned a save by allowing just one hit in the final inning to go along with two strikeouts. Knox Central was led by four RBI's and a home run from junior Casey Bright.

The Jumpers returned home on Wednesday for a contest against undefeated Boyle County. Only one team would remain undefeated after the game and although Somerset outhit the Rebels, the Jumpers suffered their first loss of the season 2-1. Loy had the lone RBI for Somerset and also added two hits, with Cimala, Blake Abbott, Sizemore, Connor Vanderploeg, Lewis and Roberts each adding a hit apiece. Cimala had the loss on the mound, pitching four innings while allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. Boyle County was led by senior Cameron Owens with both of their RBI's.

Somerset sits at 4-1 for the year and will be back on the road on Thursday and Friday, facing Wayne County and Corbin respectively.
