Son Heung-min: Red Star Belgrade goals helped after 'really tough few days'

Son Heung-min’s double against Red Star Belgrade helped put a ‘really tough few days’ behind him.

The Tottenham star was involved in the initial tackle which caused Andre Gomes to suffer a fracture dislocation to his ankle on Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

He was visibly left distraught by the tackle on Merseyside, almost immediately bursting into tears before he was sent off by referee Martin Atkinson.

But Son struck twice in four minutes during Spurs’ Champions League victory on Wednesday night to help end a difficult week on a positive note.

And the South Korean star added his friends and team-mates’ support helped him through a tough time.

He told BT Sport 2: “It was a really, really tough few days. I realised how lucky I am to have the supporters, my friends, my team-mates – everyone gave me such strong messages. Of course I still feel really, really sorry about this accident and this situation.

“I had to focus for the team. I had to keep going. I had to keep working hard. I think this is my right answer to all the people who support me.”

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, was pleased to earn his side’s first away win in 14 attempts - and their first of the season.

He told BT Sport 2: “We are happy. We are so pleased for the performance of the team. It is a difficult place to play.

“Different teams last year like Liverpool or Paris St Germain or Napoli didn’t win here. We expected a very tough game but I think the approach from the team was fantastic.

“We need to get our confidence and I think this type of game will help us stay all together and now we need to keep going. It is only a game and we need to win three points more to qualify for the next stage.

“But that is a good feeling after today and we need to keep going in this way.”
