Man City chief executive Ferran Soriano claims that the Premier League champions are “not obsessed’ with winning the Champions League as it requires some “luck”.
The Citizens were crowned the best team in England last season as they pipped Liverpool to the Premier League title on the final day.
But despite their dominance in the league in recent years, City have still struggled to win the Champions League despite triumphing in the Premier League in four of the last five seasons.
In those five campaigns, the Citizens have reached the Champions League quarter-finals three times, the semi-finals once and the final once. And their lack of European silverware is still one thing their rival fans hold over them when discussing bragging rights.
However, Man City CEO Soriano claims that it has not become an obsession for the club with “luck” as well as footballing ability required to win the competition.
Speaking on the Dr. Football podcast, Soriano said: “Whoever wins the league is the best team in the league. We say internally, ‘the league is our bread and butter. This is what we do for a living: the league’.
“The Champions League is a trophy that we want, but we know that it is subject to a bit of luck and we are not obsessed.
“People talk today about the success that Madrid have had in recent years, and I think it would be fair to say that they were a bit lucky. Perhaps I could say that they deserved to lose against PSG, against Chelsea, against us or against Liverpool.”
After describing Real Madrid as a “bit lucky” to beat Liverpool 1-0 in last season’s Champions League final, Soriano has explained how it is not always the best teams who triumph in the competition.
Soriano added: “People don’t remember that in the 80s and 90s [Real] had a fantastic team, one of the best in history, with [Emilio] Butragueno and La Quinta [Butragueno plus Sanchis, Rafael Martín Vazquez, Michel and Miguel Pardeza], and they could not win it.
“Milan eliminated them every year. So they were somewhat lucky now, but they were also very unlucky for years.”
