Sources: Reason for Nagelsmann, Chelsea collapse revealed as coach faces fresh competition for Tottenham job
Julian Nagelsmann walked away from Chelsea after not officially being offered the job, TEAMtalk understands. Now, the 35-year-old could take over at Tottenham next season.
During his final round of talks with Chelsea, Nagelsmann believed he was due to finalise his appointment at the club, something which failed to materialise.
Now, the Blues could live to regret missing out on him if the German coach goes on to be a success at their London rivals – Tottenham.
As previously noted by TEAMtalk, there is currently a ‘strong possibility’ that Nagelsmann will be the Spurs manager next season. This came after the former Bayern Munich boss was heavily linked with a switch to Chelsea.
As it stands, Mauricio Pochettino is expected to take over at Stamford Bridge, who, ironically, spent five fairly successful years at Tottenham.
Nagelsmann has a reputation for being a modern and forward-thinking coach, so he could have been the man to turn Chelsea’s fortunes around.
However, the Blues will now have to make do with Pochettino instead, it seems.
Enrique could rival Nagelsmann for Spurs job
According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Nagelsmann thought he was going to be given the Chelsea job until his final round of talks with the club.
Speaking exclusively to TEAMtalk, Bailey said: “I am told by sources close to him that Nagelsmann was ready to sign and he though that is what was transposing, but instead it was more talks.
“At that point he decided to walk away, he did not feel like the fit was right.
“It is massively surprising given one of the main reasons Luis Enrique’s camp claimed they backed away as they believed everything was pointing towards Nageslmann getting the role.”
Indeed, former Spain and Barcelona boss Enrique was another of the initial favourites to join Chelsea, but eventually backed out of negotiations.
Now, the coach could potentially rival Nagelsmann for the Tottenham job, in a shock twist.
Bailey added: “[Nagelsmann’s] people had originally said to Spurs they were not pursuing things with them, but they have gone back to Tottenham and have made it clear they are open to the opportunity.
“He could now once again find himself in a head-to-head with Enrique, who has already held talks with Tottenham.
“Despite a huge number of off-field issues at Tottenham, I am told they are stepping up the manager search.”
