SA Rugby and its former CEO, Jurie Roux, parted ways at the end of 2022 after 12 years, according the governing body’s president Mark Alexander.

Roux’s role at SA Rugby became untenable after he lost an appeal against a 2020 arbitration ruling that ordered him to pay back misallocated funds – ZAR 37m (c.GBP1.9m) – from Stellenbosch University during his time with the institution’s finance department.

A court arbitrator found that the money was missing and had been misappropriated from the accounts of the Stellenbosch University to the university’s rugby club (the world’s biggest rugby club in terms of membership) during Roux‘s time at the university’s accounts department.

Praised for his work

He has been ordered to repay the misallocated funds to his former employer but is now fighting that ruling at the Western Cape High Court.

Alexander confirmed that Roux has resigned from his position at SA Rugby but praised him for his service while working at SA Rugby.

“He’s no longer the CEO. He stepped down on 31 December as promised,” Alexander told Sport24.

“He served the organisation for 12 years and he added significant value to SA Rugby during his tenure.

“We must also look at what happened in 2016. In conjunction with the executive, when I took over, we crafted a strategic and turnaround plan for the organisation.

“And he was very key in crafting that plan. In 2016, we failed the transformation targets and came up with a strategic transformation plan and we see those results today. He was one of the drivers of that plan.

Good service to SA Rugby

“Jurie delivered only good service to SA Rugby. It’s unfortunate that things beyond ours and his control have forced him to step down from SARU.

“Jurie agreed to step down in the interest of the game and the organisation. That takes leadership.”
