South Korea vs Portugal LIVE: World Cup 2022 result, final score and reaction as Hwang Hee-chan scores winner

South Korea vs Portugal LIVE: World Cup 2022 result, final score and reaction as Hwang Hee-chan scores winner

South Korea scored an added time goal to beat already-qualified Portugal 2-1 at the World Cup in a comeback win that sent the Asian side into the last 16 ahead of Uruguay on the number of goals scored.

With the clock ticking down on South Korea’s time in the tournament, striker Son Heung-min ran free after a Portugal corner in added time and slipped a pass to Hwang Hee-chan who fired past Diogo Costa to spark wild celebrations

After an early opener by Ricardo Horta for Portugal, Kim Young-gwon gave the Koreans hope in the 27th minute when a corner struck Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo on the back and fell kindly for the defender to sweep the ball home.

The last-gasp victory for South Korea catapulted them from fourth to second place in Group H ahead of Uruguay, who beat Ghana 2-0 in the group’s other game but failed to score enough goals to finish above the Asians. Portugal top the group.

Brazil player ratings vs Cameroon: Gabriel Jesus misses his mark but Antony shines

21:24 , Michael Jones

Cameroon defeated a second-string Brazil team 1-0 in their final Group G match at the Lusail Stadium on Friday but it was not enough as the African side were knocked out of the competition.

Cameroon finished third on four points, two points below second-placed Switzerland, who defeated Serbia 3-2. Brazil, who had already qualified, finished on top on goal difference with six points and will face South Korea in the last 16.

Fred, Antony and Bruno Guimaraes all came close to scoring, while Gabriel Martinelli was the stand-out player for the five-time champions, who looked set for a goalless draw.

But Cameroon finally broke the deadlock when Vincent Aboubakar powered in a header in the third minute of stoppage time before being sent off for collecting a second yellow card for taking off his shirt in the celebration.

Here’s how the Brazil players rated during their clash on Friday night:

Switzerland into last 16 after edging tempestuous five-goal shootout with Serbia

21:21 , Michael Jones

Another thrilling final group match which turned this way and that ended with Switzerland reaching the last 16 of the World Cup for the third time in their last four attempts after beating Serbia 3-2.

While the action on the pitch was exhilarating, with the lead changing hands on three occasions, the encounter will also be remembered for off-the-ball clashes between both sets of players, while fans in the stadium had to be warned about their behaviour too.

In a rematch of the ill-tempered 2018 World Cup clash between the pair, when Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka celebrated the last-gasp success by making an eagle gesture, pointing to their Albanian heritage but mainly to antagonise Serbians - who consider Kosovo, where there is an Albanian majority, as a Serbian province still - tension was never far from the air.

Uruguay boss backs players after World Cup exit as Ghana coach steps down

21:18 , Michael Jones

Boss Diego Alonso refused to blame his Uruguay stars after they tumbled out of the World Cup 2022.

Two first half goals from Giorgio de Arrascaeta, after Sergio Rochet saved Andre Ayew’s penalty, looked like sending Uruguay through as Group H runners up with a 2-0 win over Ghana.

But Hwang Hee-chan’s late goal gave South Korea a 2-1 victory over Portugal to secure second spot and dump Uruguay out on Friday.

Alonso said: “I don’t have anything to say to my players because they broke their backs, they gave their best versions. I don’t want to use excuses but everyone can see what happened in the previous matches.”

90+4 mins: RED CARD! Vincent Aboubakar celebrates his goal by pulling off his shirt and swinging it around his head as his teammates all swarm him.

The referee has no choice but to book him and as he’s already picked up a yellow card he has to leave the pitch. Two yellows equal a red and it’s an early night for the Cameroon goalscorer.

Fred and Rodrygo also go off with Bruno Guimaraes and Everton Ribeiro brought on.

Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

20:11 , Michael Jones

51 mins: Chance! Cameroon come within inches of opening the scoring. They work the ball around the edge of the box before Bryan Mbeumo slips a pass into the right side for Vincent Aboubakar.

He shoots on the spin and fizzes an effort mere inches wide of the far post!

Dani Alves to become Brazil’s oldest World Cup captain against Cameroon

18:24 , Michael Jones

Veteran defender Dani Alves will become Brazil’s oldest World Cup captain in their final group game against Cameroon on Friday.

The 39-year-old former Barcelona full-back was controversially included in head coach Tite’s squad for Qatar 2022 amid reports it was to act as a minder for close friend Neymar.

Alves, who now plays in Mexico for UNAM Pumas, will wear the skipper’s armband as Tite prepares to make changes, with top spot in Group G guaranteed if they avoid defeat against Cameroon.

"It’s been 16 years with the national squad and I’ve tried to do my very best. Life, I think, always rewards the people who love what they do, who truly do their best in the mission.

The Socceroos were surprise qualifiers from Group D, not least after losing their first match 4-1 against France.

But successive 1-0 wins over Tunisia and Denmark took Australia to the knock-out stages for the first time since 2006, and Arnold insists they are not finished yet.

Group G permutations

18:12 , Michael Jones

Brazil have already secured their place in the World Cup knockout stages and require just a point against Cameroon to top Group G.

Any of the other three teams could still advance, with second-placed Switzerland best placed but requiring a victory over Serbia to guarantee their progress. A point would be enough for the Swiss if Cameroon fail to beat Brazil.

Serbia and Cameroon both need to win their respective games to keep alive their qualification hopes.

Cameroon vs Brazil team changes

Cameroon boss Rigobert Song makes four changes to the team that started the 3-3 draw against Serbia last time out. Enzo Ebosse and Christopher Wooh form the centre-back pairing with Moumi Ngamaleu brought into midfield and Vincent Aboubakar leading the line.

Tite makes nine changes to his already qualified Brazil side. Only Eder Militao and Fred keep their places from the 1-0 win over Switzerland.

That means starts for Arsenal duo Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

Brazil boss Tite and injured superstar Neymar hailed Casemiro as the “best midfielder in the world” after seeing him fire his country through to the World Cup knockout stage.

The Manchester United man’s 83rd-minute strike secured a 1-0 Group G win over Switzerland on Monday, which means they are through with a game to spare, prompting Neymar to tweet after the game: “Casemiro has been the best midfielder in the world for a long time.”

Asked at his post-match press conference if he agreed, Tite said: “As a habit, I always respect opinions and I usually don’t comment on opinions, but I will allow myself to do so today. I agree.”

How Brazil tried to fill Neymar void with Fred - and abjectly failed

17:58 , Michael Jones

What happens when a superstar forward, with the weight of a nation on his shoulders for the third World Cup running, sustains an injury in match No 1? After the period of mourning, there is discussion. 40 minutes of it.

Brazil’s pre-match press conference on Sunday – involving manager Tite, defender Marquinhos and Tite’s assistant Cesar Sampaio – was mostly devoted to the world’s most expensive player and the effect of his absence for the rest of the group-phase. “Football’s about context and sometimes we have to be strategic,” said Tite. “We have to think outside the box but we’re very confident we have the right replacement.”

So, who would it be? An abundance of terrific depth in attack, deeper than any other team in the tournament, should cover for the loss of the prodigal son. So, would it be one of Arsenal’s dynamic duo: Gabriel Jesus or Gabriel Martinelli? Maybe Manchester United’s £85m signing Antony? Or Real Madrid young gun Rodrygo? Or how about… Fred?

Luis Suarez endures rollercoaster of emotions as Uruguay suffer cruel World Cup exit

17:48 , Michael Jones

The devilish grin painted across his face in the first half soon turned to sheer panic and then despair as Luis Suarez processed Uruguay’s fate. Out of the World Cup on goals scored, to the delight of South Korea, Suarez was agonisingly close to one last inspiring performance.

The divisive forward had earlier cackled in delight after inspiring a two-goal lead, thrilled to play the role of the “devil” at the expense of Ghana once more. But that joy would turn sour after Hwang Hee-Chan’s late, late winner for South Korea, who usurped La Celeste to finish second behind Portugal in Group H.

For so long Uruguay’s saviour, Suarez had delivered when most had dismissed him as merely an enigmatic presence in a camp between generations, having hopelessly toiled away against South Korea and Portugal.

Casemiro provides Brazil relief in Neymar absence to edge past Switzerland

17:40 , Michael Jones

“We can’t stop talking about Neymar,” Casemiro had said in the build-up to this latest stop on Brazil’s quest to win a sixth World Cup. After his winning goal here against Switzerland, they’ll only be talking about him.

With the side’s talismanic No 10 injured and watching wave after wave of pressure go unrewarded from afar, it was left to the defensive midfielder with just five international goals to his name to do his best impression of the absent hero with 75.

The strike was a sweet one, struck hard and to Yann Sommer’s left, the Swiss keeper left with no chance as it arrowed into the corner. The relief in the stadium – and no doubt the team hotel where the laid-up Neymar was watching on – was palpable.

Hwang Hee-Chan strikes dramatic winner to send South Korea through after beating Portugal

17:36 , Michael Jones

Just as the PA system announced six minutes of stoppage time at the Education City Stadium, Son Heung-Min’s wait was finally over. For the previous ninety, he had barely had a chance to do what he does best and run at a broken and splintered defence. Now, with half of it caught upfield for a set-piece, finally, here was his chance.

Son burst away, darting towards Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, yet even his furious pace was not at full pelt after a gruelling final game in Group F that had appeared headed for a draw. White shirts began to crowd him. He had run into traffic. But thankfully, he had Hwang Hee-Chan in support.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward’s late finish and Uruguay’s mere two-goal victory over Ghana - eventually confirmed five minutes or so after the sound of the final whistle, to a joyous Korean huddle in the centre circle of the pitch - was enough for Asia’s most successful footballing nation and its biggest star to reach the last-16.

Cameroon vs Brazil team news and predicted line-ups

17:33 , Michael Jones

Andre Onana has been suspended by his country after falling out with coach Rigobert Song, with Devis Epassy deputising. Song has an injury doubt over Olivier Ntcham, with Vincent Aboubakar pushing for a start after shining off the bench against Serbia.

The Selecao are without Neymar, Danilo and Alex Sandro through injury. Eder Militao and Alex Telles are the likely replacements at full-back, while Rodrygo could be chosen in a more attack-minded line-up after Fred replaced Neymar in the Switzerland match.

Antony, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli are other options to join Raphinha and Vini Jr, with Lucas Paqueta in line to start again.

While extension rotation might hit the attack mostly, with that aforementioned trio an option with Bruno Guimaraes joining Paqueta and Casemiro in midfield.

Predicted line-ups

Cameroon XI: Epassy; Fai, Castelletto, Nkoulou, Tolo; Hongla, Anguissa, Kunde; Aboubakar, Choupo-Moting, Toko Ekambi

Brazil XI: Alisson; Militao, Marquinhos, Silva, Telles; Casemiro, Paqueta; Raphinha, Paqueta, Rodrygo; Vinicius Jr

Who has been eliminated from World Cup 2022 and who has qualified for the knockout stage?

17:26 , Michael Jones

The 2022 World Cup is in full swing as 32 nations began on 20 November aiming to lift the Jules Rimet trophy in Doha on 18 December.

Despite the many off-field issues around the tournament in Qatar, the group stage has thrown up plenty of thrills and spills, with Argentina losing to Saudi Arabia going down as one of the greatest shocks of any World Cup in history. Japan also stunned Germany, while Spain and England racked up goals in statement opening wins.

The top two teams from each group go through to the round of 16, with group winners taking on the runners-up from a different group, while the third- and fourth-placed nations in each group are eliminated from the competition.

Here are the teams qualified for the last 16 so far:

Ghana haunted by Uruguay again as World Cup history repeats itself

On paper, Ghana could not have asked for a better chance against Uruguay .

As Andre Ayew stood over the penalty spot, history was there to be rewritten. It was the moment Ghana dreamed of: the chance, perhaps not to heal the scars of Johannesburg, but to move on and leave them behind. The opportunity to knock Uruguay out of the World Cup was one that was raised when the group stage draw was made months, for it to arrive when their own progress was on the line added a sense of ambition to their lust for revenge.

On paper, a penalty, from 12 yards, at 0-0, was as clear an opportunity as you could imagine.
